2002 225 Mercury Optimax
Coming in offshore Sunday, running 40mph, I noticed motor would varies in rpm’s 300-500 ocassionally. Once we got to the hill, we idled for a minute while waiting on trailer, while investigating, I found that the motor would take fuel while in gear, but would not reach WOT in Neutral. Long story, short, yesterday I have replaced all plugs, and serviced all injectors, motor will max @ 3000 rpm’s and pop/spit when in neutral, in gear motor will reach WOT @ max rpm range. Any ideas???
Some engines have a rpm limiter when in neutral that prevents the engine from being oversped. Not sure this is the case or not with this model.
As for the fluctuation of rpm under load, makes sure the fuel filters are clean, fuel line is not restriced, and there is no air in the fuel. Proper operation of the optis depends on proper fuel and air pressure. Fuel pressure is always 10 psi above air pressure up to a max of 90 psi. Any type of performance issue will need to have the pressures checked.
How did you service the injectors?

Had the the injectors “cooked”???
that motor will not run wot in neutral
besides you should never run it above 2000rpms unless its under load

what he said! There’s no reason to rev any modern injected engine in neutral
