PROBLEM WITH STEERING

HELLO ALL, I’M HOPEING YOU GUYS CAN HELP? I HAVE A SEASTAR HYDRAULIC STEERING UNIT HC5345, WHILE RUNNING THE MOTOR PULLS TO THE RIGHT. I HAVE TO KEEP SPINING THE WHEEL TO THE LEFT TO STAY STRAIGHT. CHECKED THE OIL LEVEL, AIR IN LINE. I CAN TURN THE MOTOR BY HAND AND HEAR OIL PUSHING THROUGH THE CYLINDER? I DON’T BELIEVE I SHOULD BE ABLE TO TURN THE MOTOR BY HAND? IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO OTHER THAN SPENDING 600-700 DOLLARS TO BUY A NEW ONE. ANY INPUT WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANKS IN ADVANCE AND HOPE EVERYONE HAS A MERRY CHRISTMAS! I KNOW WHAT I MAY BE BUYING MYSELF!!!CATCH UM UP…MIKE

Have you tried bleeding it to purge the air out of the system?

It is probably a bad lock valve in the helm which there to prevent fluid from moving without input from the wheel. basically “no ■■■■■■■■” in hydraulic form.

I could be dirt or debris that is keeping the valve from operating correctly. Look into cleaning/rebuilding the helm and that should fix the problem

If you can turn the motor by hand it’s either air in the system or the cylinder.

Depending on how bad it is, it could be the trim tab that’s bolted on above the propeller.
If that thing is not lined up right, it could cause it to pull.

Happy boatin’ y’all!!

air will definately cause the problem, but like hairball said, it could also easily be debris making the valve stick.
sometimes bleeding the system, and flushing with new fluid can fix it.

thanks all, I think it could be the seal at the helm. as I was adding fluid. it was dripping down from under the steering wheel much more than could have spilled putting it in. so i’m thinking the seal is leaking???any thoughts? I’m trying everything else before I have to replace the cylinder…man those things are expensive!!!save me some fish i’ll be out of commission for a bit. catch um up…mike

the seal at teh helm under the wheel is very easy to replace, once you get teh steering wheel off. 3 screw, and 5 minutes, after you get teh wheel off, then you have to add fluid and bleed teh system

HEY CHRIS THANKS I PULLED THE COVER FROM BEHIND THE HELM. IT LOOKED LIKE THE BACK OF THE HELM PUMP WAS WET WITH OIL, NOT THAT MUCH BUT SOME. YOU SAY I CAN GET TO THE GASKETS FROM THE STEERING WHEEL SIDE? THANKS FOR THE HELP
