Project for Happy Bob

I could find your number and call, but I thought I’d start a thread so people could eventually see a finished product here. I have a very small project request. I can provide the thin aluminum sheet material needed unless you’ve got some high grade marine type material that’d be better to use than street sign grade stuff.

I’m wanting to make a recessed switch panel for my Mako’s helm. The existing original panel is essentially a flat piece of material with the switches, fuses and indicator lights mounted along it. I will set it back up with only waterproof toggle switches and LED indicator lights for each switch along with a 12V receptacle, iPod plug, stereo remote pad, etc.

I’ll need it welded up to fit where the current one is, and I’ll handle all the drilling and mounting of everything afterwards. I’m thinking some zinc chromate primer and metallic black paint with clearcoat will work to finish it up. That way I can put on a white Mako Marine logo and labels for each switch in vinyl “decals.”

An inch or two of recess will probably be good. An angled inside face with the bottom shallower than the top might also be cool. This thing mounts on a vertical face under the steering wheel on the back of the center console I’ll get some pix up later.

I also thought of putting an inch wide strip of plexi across the length of the panel on the bottom to hold small items if needed. (panel length runs horizontally) Perhaps a few small tabs welded onto the inside of the recess would allow such a plexi strip to be screwed on with the face of the panel remaining smooth.

Let me know what you think.

Phin,
I’m sure I could fab something up for you. Get me some pics and maybe a drawing with dimensions and send them to me. We’ll figure something out.

My email is: bobvg@windstream.net

New ride? BTW…do you have my cell number on call block?

If you want to go with custom CNC cut plastic w/ laser engraving, this guy did mine & he’s super reasonable. Save you the effort of painting/labeling/etc yourself. I feel like I owe him a plug or two. Looks like he’s got all the Mako graphics on file…

P1, you must have been out fishing when I’ve called you back… ?
New ride- yes- I ain’t trying to brag though. Lots of little projects to be done to it. Taking the bottom paint off this week. She is up on blocks right now. New fuel filters throughout the boat and engine and decarbing last week. Stripped and oiled teak last week. Spun hub out of the prop week before last and used that as an excuse to get a new offshore prop… Compounding and waxing next few weeks. Trim tabs next few weeks. New trailer lights and wiring this week. Anchor shute next month. New live well aerator system next month. Leaning post next month. Wash down system next month. New lowrance HDS with thru hull 'ducer this winter. T top and curtains next year. New Icom’s and shakespeare 5225XT’s next year. And on and on. The good thing is that it’s ready to shrimp as is…

Reb17, I have seen those on the classicmako forum, and they have a nice OEM look to them. They aren’t what I’m looking for really though. I’ll post what Happy Bob makes eventually… hopefully, so it will make sense.

It looks exactly like this except no leaning post or T top on mine yet.

Rebel17, I looked at your buddy’s site. I may have to get something like this put inside of the recessed box that Happy Bob can make…

What do you think? Would this be too cool for my boat? I’ve already got the red LED’s to put behind it. Vector LED could cut the logo and labels to glow red…

This one may actually be recessed like I’m wanting.

This looks like a direct copy of the OEM panel on my boat except mine has toggle switches instead of rockers-

I’m a firm believer in excess and overkill for coolness sake :sunglasses:

He only charged me $65 for my whole panel, so if you’ve got the switches and LED’s already I see no reason not to go for it. I think DFreedom is getting him to make something as well…
