So this past weekend I spun my prop hub for the second time in a year of owning this boat. While I am going to get a new hub pressed in this afternoon, it got me thinking about getting a second prop to keep in the boat in case it is needed. Getting tired of the 3mph ride back to the ramp after slinging a hub.
I do not have a tach as this is a tiller motor, but by the sound the motor is not over reving or getting bogged down with the current prop and standard “fishing load”.
The current set up is 30 Hp Yamaha (30MSHY) with a 9 7/16 Y 13-F prop on a 1648W Lowe, currently that pushes the boat fully loaded at about 31-32 mph (GPS). I do not give the motor much releif as I run it hard, all or nothing.
My true question is should I go back with the same prop specs., or do I need to adjust the pitch so that I am not blowing out hubs as often? I know changing the pitch will likely change the preformance, but I am willing to do that if it means not blowing a hub every six months…
Any suggestions as to which way to go would be much appreciated.
Motor and boat size and top speed sound about right to me. If not hi rev’ing or bogging to carry a load I would not change a thing. Just get a spare the same size.
Ask the shop that’s rehubing your prop. I have bought spares in the past from them. If it’s too much for a used one…bite the bullet and order a new one Mr. Money Bags!
Well got the prop rehubbed, and also found out who I will NOT be taking it to in the future. Something just does not sit right with me that one shop can do it while you wait while another one takes 4 days and charges 120% more for the 2 minutes it takes to press a hub… my jaw hit my desk when they told me the invoice amount.
Also ordered a new prop for 75% what is cost to rehub my old prop.
That is who did it last time, trying to save some time running up from James Island cost me big time. Mike is a great guy with exceptional service!!! He will be getting all my future business and will go out of my way to recommend him.
You need to take it to Skips Propeller Service He does a great job and very reasonable also has extra props for sale also !!
Thats who did mine for my jon boat, I went into the back and chatted with him as he pressed it in. Nice guy and I will go back if need be. It was like $40.
