Prowler kayaks - the new Trident 15 vs Big Game

I am looking at getting my first 'yak this year, and was looking hard at these two rigs. This would be used in fresh/salt water for fishing, exploring, and possibly some river trips with one or two nights on the water (need to carry very spartan camping gear… like, less than 30 lb).

The Big Game looks stable (by comparison), but I wonder if the Trident wouldn’t handle better.

BTW, for informational purposes, I am 6-1, and about 205 pounds when I don’t lay off the fried chicken.

Thoughts? Or other ideas completely?

Thanks in advance…

Get a ride 135!

Go Buckeyes!!! No, Seriously, GO!!!

Bah, dont listen to the funny man behind the curtain.

Hobie Revolution, once you peddle its hard to accept a boat without em. You can still paddle if you have the urge, and it goes everywhere, last week i was in 8" water up creeks on outgoing tides and in 14ft offshore in surf having a blast. All easy with the peddle drive.

I have a ride 135 and a Hobie Rev. While both are good Kayaks for you size would recomend the Hobie Outback. More room in the cockpit and the trade off for performance would not be that big.

What is chiefly needed is skill rather than machinery.

We are trying to get S1t to forget he has the 135

I have the Ride 135 (thanks Dave) and it’s great. I don’t know about the other but at 6’ 180lbs the ride is very comfortable, even standing.

Ride 135 - super stable

for 2x the price, the Hobi Revolution is nice and allows you to fish while peddling. It is also faster than paddling.
But for standing in a YAK, Ride 135.

Thanks for the input, guys…

How durable is the Hobie propulsion system around stuff like rocks (in a current). One of my “dream” trips is to put in the Congaree at Columbia (rock city) and go down to Lowfalls Landing at Santee (about 60 miles by water, I think - thus the need for multi-day travel).

The Ride 153 interests me as well - I’m keeping an open mind about this. the price tag of the Hobie is a bit of a hindrance.

The “bigger” question is how good are their hulls. If you do some searches on the net, you’ll see that their hulls fail…frequently. Some guys have had 3-5 hull failures. They (Hobie) are good at replacing the hulls. But, with my luck I know where I’d be when the hull cracked around the “pedal well”, and started takin’ on water. Bottom line (IMO)…“too expensive and too many moving parts”. Leave 'em to the “Preppies” on the gated communities, pedaling on the back nine of the country club…

Bah, Im a 20 yr navy guy retired, dont preppie me…

Regarding the hulls, those were earlier models, in 2007 they redesigned them and the only time mine leaks is if i turtle it because the large front hatch is meant to keep water out righside up more than upside down.

Regarding the peddles, Im abusing my yak pretty good, dragging it on and off docks, over rocks to getto creeks, etc, and they are holding up well.

Now if I was going to shoot rapids I would probably choose a different yak, but even if i did want to do it in a sit on top i certainly wouldnt do it with peddles down.

But as far as the occasional bump against rocks/oysterbed/bottom they seem to be holding up well.

Paddlin4 is right about earlier year models did sometimes develope hull leaks, but the 07 and laters have addressed that problem (and it wasnt always then)

i have a friend that bought the new 15,and it looks to be a very nice yak.its much faster and easier to paddle than the big game.at your weight,it would work well.

“Anywhere in the surf”

Worked for a living, not a sir, the deckboat was the only way i could talk the wife into a power boat. she regrets it some now but plans to make the best of it.

We do what we can with what we have <grin>

Was out for 3 hours this afternoon going against tide and 20+ mph winds and had a great time.

The only thing Ill give ya on the Hobie is yeah, you can buy 2 regular midline kayaks for the price of one Revo
