Public ponds

Hello all. I live in the midlands area and have a 3.5 year old who just got interested in fishing a couple weeks ago. I’m looking for local ponds I can take her to fish from the bank until she’s ready to boat fish or when I can have my wife or a grand parent in the boat with us for safety. All the ponds I fished in as a kid have changed hands as their owners have passed. I don’t mind paying a small fee or even a yearly membership if the fishing from the bank is solid. Any ideas info are appreciated. Please email me at robert522002@yahoo.com if you have any suggestions. Also, any freshwater near Charleston would be good to as I’m coming down this weekend on a small family get a way. It has been really great watching my daughter catch her first fish, and bitter sweet too because my dad who passed suddenly in Feb never got to see her catch one. It won’t be long and she’ll be going with me and her other grand father on a our yearly charter adventure!

Try Gibson Park in Lexington. It’s just off I-20 & Hwy 6. She should be able to get some bream there. Also Shealy Pond off Hwy 6 in Red Bank.

I fished Gibson hard for a couple hours and between two people caught 3 3-4 finger bream. I was told by multiple people not to waste my time but thought I have caught 'em where people said I couldn’t before. That place though sheesh. I fished up into the head to where I could only paddle because the weeds were so thick the trolling motor got wound up in them.

The other place looks good but the bank fishing seems to be a challenge not good for a little one. Have you fished there? Any good spots you know in there? Launching anything other than a yak, or really small john boat is not feasible because A the “ramp” is about 45 degrees down and the road you’d have to back across is busy as heck on a blind curve.

You gonna talk or FISH!

I’ve only fished at Gibson a couple of times off of the bank & like you, just caught a few small ones. I always wanted to put a small boat in and try the rest of it. I’ve never fished at Shealey Pond. Just going by what a freind told me. He fished right at the “ramp” with a beetle spin. It does look like a yak or canoe would be the best way to go.

It’s too bad that there are so many nice looking ponds around but they all have No Trespassing signs everywhere. One of these days I’ll get brave and go up to one of the houses and just ask if I can fish there, promising to release all fish and not leave any trash. I’m always worried about getting shot by a nervous owner.

Sorry I wasn’t much help. If I come across any good spots, I’ll let you know.

I’ve actually been doing the asking thing, and I see their side completely. People come in rape my pond, leave their crap all over and who has take care of it? The owner of course. No one has been rude as of yet, and I’ve actually only caught one person home. They don’t let hardly anyone in, but know my in-laws and think highly of them so maybe… I don’t know how long I should wait to hear before I send my father-in-law down there with my daughter lol. My daughter’s great grand father (mother in law’s dad) actually fished the pond but I didn’t know it until after I’d talked to the guy, and I’d like to tell him that, but don’t want to seem a pest or pushy. I’ve left several business cards with an explanation of who I am and what I was asking for and my cell number. These are all local ponds and my card has a local address and my company is fairly well known in our tiny town. I guess I need to beat the bushes on a Saturday around 11 or

In Charleston area…try James Island county park. Real friendly bank and opportunity to catch a variety of fish species. Good luck

Thank you.

Are you near Irmo/Harbison area? If so my neighborhood has 4 ponds, and 3 have access by land. I got my son hooked on fishing in them as they have big bass, shellcracker, Blue Gill, and White Crappie. When I say big, I mean we had a 6 # bass hooked yesterday on a beetle spin with a Jr. rod and broke the line. Then had another 4 pounder at the bank and broke the line. Caught 9 keeper White Crappie in 20 minutes, a 12" Blue Gill and a nice 1 pound shellcracker. All on kids ultra light with beetle spins and nightcrawlers. It’s great for kids. The only rules of the community is that you have to be with a homeowner, and you can only keep 2 of each species.

I live with fear everday, and sometimes she lets me go fishing
