Public Service Announcement

Guys and gals, PLEASE do not be grabbing fish you are going to release through the gills. With increasing pressure and already decreasing numbers of fish, we need to do our best to conserve what we have. Please educate others as you see them doing it as well. That is all!

PEZ ; BEEN PREACHING IT FOR YEARS BUT DOSEN
T SEEM TO DO ANY GOOD , CONTINUALLY SEEING PICS OF FINGERS IN GILLS , LARGE BREEDERS HELD UP BY GILL PLATES OR BOKO GRIPS WITH ENTIRE WEIGHT OF FISH HELD BY MOUTH… MAYBE WHEN THERE ARE NO MORE TO BE CAUGHT THESE INCONSIDERATE ONES WILL REMEMBER BEING TOLD ABOUT IT…:imp:

My favorite is the pics with 5 big reds and every one picture perfect. It’s a shame because the charter guys are just as bad about. They don’t want to say no to the clients. It’s good advertisement but bad practice.

I always tell people to take a breath and hold it. When you have to breathe again the fish should be back in the water.

I support the public service announcement, too many great fish hanging from the bottom jaw.

I somewhat agree. I know a lot of people on here know this already, but for those people it was also to remind them to educate others. You also have to think, there’s plenty of non-members that browse this forum too that might not know.

If I ever catch another fish and I intend to release it, I promise, no gill grabbing. Don’t think I ever have. I learned a long tie ago as a kid, some of those gills can cut you.

I like this as well!!!

And if you use a Boga or other lip gripper, save it for those 14" Specks. Don’t use it on a 30# Red Drum. Better yet, buy a bigger landing net.

Agree, dparker. Also, its not a Boga gaff…I hate seeing pictures where they’re using the boga and its made a hole through their lip like a gaff while they hold it at a 90 degree angle from the fishes jaw.

Oh yeah and didn’t mention. Unless I’m sheepshead fishing I always use circle hooks.

Lot of hate on Boga grips. I agree they shouldn’t be used as a method to suspend a fish by the jaw, especially a bull red. But, I think they are a great tool to control the fish. What no one mentions often but IMO is much worse than how you hold them, is dropping them in the bottom of the boat because you didn’t have a good grip on it and the fish does what fish do - thrash - especially when you remove the hook. The Boga allows you to get a good grip on the lip and lift the fish by the belly out of the water. If and when it freaks out, you’re a lot less likely to drop it in the boat using it. My opinion. I use one. Side benefit - no hands in the gills.

I just remove the hooks while the fish is in the water.Put one hand under the belly and lift up a little, they’ll calm right down.I mostly use artificial and if I have live bait,I don’t let them swallow it.

You try to tell people.
