Purpose One 11-13-2007

Got a call from edisto fisher. Said that purpose one had an extra spot on the boat so I hopped on for the ride. Me, Edisto Fisher, Purpose One and Frank. Nice ocean and a good day of fishing. We fished all over from 130’ back into 80’ fighting some pretty good current out deep along with some sharks. First blood on the boat was a king caught on a diamond jig for Frank.

Purpose one drew first grouper blood on the boat with a nice scamp. It wasn’t long after I hear some shouting on the port side. Edisto fisher is talking some heavy smack, but backs it up throwing another nice scamp on the boat. He’s stoked now and in a zone. Shortly after, he follows it up with some red snapper meat for the ice box. Some say it was an “American Red Snapper”, but I could not tell the nationality, personally. Then, I throw an average scamp on the boat. Edisto fisher hooks into another one yelling something about “the North Carolina boys putting fish in the boat”. His rod is doubled over and he has a grouper on the way to the surface. Then, somehow on the way to the surface, his grouper shape-shifted into a daymaker remora. There was no more “North Carolina” chat for at least a half hour after that. Everyone had put a grouper on the boat except poor Frank. He tells us that his goal is to just catch one on his jig rod. We hit a streak of silence and there it is, Frank is hooked up with rod doubled over. Then the biggest grouper of the day comes over the rail under Frank’s command. It was a very pretty fish. It looked much bigger than 18#.

I think we finished up with 5 grouper total with 2 being real nice gags (biggest was 18#), 1 Red Snapper, 1 king, a limit of red porgies, a dozen or so vermillion, a dozen or so BSB’s, a couple grunts, triggers for a nice looking box of fish.

We had a great time fishing. Purpose one is definitely a skilled fishermen and I would be lying if I said that I didn’t learn a few things! Also, it was a fun crew all day. They listened to my jokes and even laughed at them once o

Sounds like some good diving depths. Surprised you did not talk them into a bottom drop.

Nice Catch!!

All Rise - 31 Contender Fish Around with a pair of 250 Yamahas

I tried a couple of times, but they wouldn’t let me bring my toys.

What depth was the snapper? Is EF as hot as Hoppy says he is?

This is not a chawade…

We need total concentwation…

Thanks for the report!

What has the world come to?

Glacier Bay boys riding on a tracker marine boat, and internet aliases catching shape-shifting fish…

Next thing you know, Hoppy will have an ETEC on the back of his seafox, and Greg1 will be using an Avet reel (that Phin sold him).

Sounds good. Hook me up w/ something comparable to a Tiagra 30 wlrs for around $350 and I’ll test its guts.

Remember…I fish in over 3000ft of water and usually leave the reel in free spool w/ clicker on until a fish bites. Line capacity and simple clickers are important.

I assume you’re familiar with spectra braid? The Pro EXW30/2 is comparable to the 30wlrs. You might get a few more yards on the Tiagra… depending on what # test and what type of line. Hook the two together with 150# braid, and which one would win? This may not be as important to some as it is to others. The shimano has a closed wet drag and the Avet has an open dry drag. Shimano has open bearings, and the Avet has sealed bearings. The Shimano weighs more, but it has chromed screws instead of stainless. They each have their pro’s and cons, but you would obviously just save a few bucks when you could and get the one for $350. I’d do the same.

I don’t have the kind of factory connection to beat your factory connection’s price. Wait… I don’t even have a factory connection. I will let you know if things change though.

I’m thinking there were no Avets or Shimanos on board P1’s boat the other day unless Skinnee brought one aboard. Sorry I took the thread on a tangent.

That’s not my factory connection price…but that’s a price point that would seriously make me look at switching brands.

We usually still leave 200-400 ft of mono top shot. How much hollow core could we fit under the 400ft of mono?

that doesnt look like purpose grp… ha ha

The specs for the EXW30/2 are pretty conservative-
630/40#, 460/50 mono,
500/130 hollow braid, 780/80 hollow braid, 805/65 solid braid, 1080/50 solid braid

From my experience, more line than what’s stated above will fit on these reels.
~700yds of 80# hollow braid with 200-400ft of 80# mono will fit on this reel is my best guess… Maybe more.

My reasoning for that guess is as follows-
I was told there was almost 600yds of 200# hollow put on my TRX30 (same size spool as the EXW30) when I told someone to fill it with as much as possible.
And I have put 575yd spools of 50# mono onto these reels several times even though it’s only rated for 460yds of 50#.
When I put 300yd spools of solid 80# braid on these reels for backing, I split the 575yd spools of 50# mono between two reels for the topshots. So that’s 300yds of solid 80#, and 280yds of 50#. The hollow spectra, as you know lays much much flatter than solid when you put it on tight.

The 30wlrs Tiagra definately has a little more capacity than the Avet 30W, but it also a bigger and heavier reel. You could go with a narrow Avet 50/2 and have a slightly bigger spool than the Tiagra 30wlrs- and you’d have a much longer handle and more drag overhead.
The 50 narrow Avet is rated for 575yds of 50# mono, and it cost about $70 more than the 30W.

Congrats on a great day guys.

Oooops. Our bad. Didn’t realize you were still fishing for "atta boy"s.

Hand what out?
