Purpose One, Edisto-fisher, me and a college buddy of mine started looking at stuff around the black banks and then southward towards the Ebanks. Pulled a few scamp there on one nice lump, and the grouper bite simply shut down about 10 min. after we got anchored perfectly over the first good show. We proceeded to pick at the bucket liners, bsb, etc. on every piece we anchored on after that, and could not get the grouper going again. AJ’s and cudas were a very big problem every time we put our live bait down. One aggresive stink ax was not a problem after he got popped by the gaff though. Oh, viz was good on top today, divers. We could see the cudas hanging out about 20’ down at times.
So we left that area and looked at other spots out deeper. Dropped bait on extremely scampish looking stuff several different times and nada. Even fished stuff where grouper were clearly and distinctly being marked on the sounder. We kept moving in hopes of finding somewhere that they’d be more hungry… and also because all morning, the anchor course had us trying to anchor on the side of the ledge to fish any of the ledge- if that makes sense to you bottom fishermen. It was really agravating to have to motor fish or find spots that were inshore of the ledge or on a piece sticking jutting out that we could get anchored on right.
Anyhow, by the time the current changed this afternoon, and we had observed very many lumps and outcrops all over the 30fa. break, we got the scampers going and used the last few live baits we had to get the two gags.
Purpose One got me back for outfishing him the last time we went on a scouting trip like this. He got both gags today (clearly whipping my az). I did sling most of the bucket liners into the bucket all day though. My buddy that I invited who’d never grouper fished before succeeded in catching 2 scampers, but the last one was dropped back into the water because of his fish slinging ineptitude. Penn 113H; Purpose One refuses to be overburdened by anything heavier. Upgrading the drags was discussed at length yesterday during the ride in, which will make them even better rock busters. We’ll fish them as “amateur-modified Penns.” The 3/0 and 4/0 Avets will remain stock though.
When you post a report that is more of a slamming relative to this report, then I will agree that this is not a slamming.
What I am expecting from you is a report where you fished during the summer and caught more gags and/or more pounds of grouper and snapper with 3 fishermen/women and one guy/girl who’d never fished for these species before.
Is this clear to you or am I double speaking??
P.S. - if you and 3 buddies had caught the same fish above and reported it here or on the other site and called it a catch of the century, I still would have posted a reply saying good job. The criticism spiel gets old you know; so I will say to you also- good luck with your future internet posting.

what is it with the whole summertime spiel you keep bringing up? I catch bottomfish all year. Winter/fall do bring fish closer, but the fish are still out there eating. Sorry if this is the first year you have caught some quality fish in the Summer. Congratulations.

And i quit posting reports as this hobby of mine is getting old. It has lost its luster. Started to lose it since the internet bravados showed up. Now, everyone is a wannabe fisherperson, who talk about who is going to post the report when they get back to the “hill.”

You just said that you don’t report fish on here anymore… so you come here and belittle others’ reports? I am sorry that it has come to that for you.
I post here because it was a very short time ago when I read this site and didn’t say anything because I was stuck somewhere where I couldn’t fish offshore or inshore. It made me want to fish more, and it gave me something to look forward to.
Can you not remember those times?
If you are so good at what you call nothing special, then why not share what you’re doing or how you’re doing it. If anybody reelly was good at it, they’d be secure enough about themselves to come on here and post the gps coordinates, bait and prep used, fish relation to the structure per current direction, rigs, tackle, trip planning, anchoring or drifting strategies (you know I’m not close to done with this list…) etc.

Keep doing what you are doing if that’s your perogative. Again, I was not recently introduced to saltwater fishing. You assume that because I was not posting on the internet about it until last year or even this summer if you want to be specific. You assume too much about people, and the cynical slant is very telling. I have fished my whole life just like you, and it wasn’t to post something on the internet. The difference is merely our perogatives on here I guess. I am blessed to be able to do what I have this summer, and I am glad I am friends with people like Purpose One who love fishing enough to do it for a living and listen to what everyone has to say to become better. You seem to be annoyed by us catching fish or posting about it on here.

Phin, post a pic of your bottom machine. Point out what you are looking for with Grouper vs snapper vs what ever. Not being smarta$$ this is one of those things I can not distinguish very well yet…
