Need to buy some pole holders, and am having a hard time making up my mind.
If your boat has provisions to carry a push pole, what system does it use? Think I’m leaning towards the V-marine spool style.

I have the same accon marine ones. They won’t catch fly line or a tripping hazard when your walking the gunnel fighting a fish.

Thanks for the input, guys.
Those are the style that are on the other Bentz-Craft flats boat, the 99. They work well when used, but I have had to replace two of them. One due to breakage from snagged on a rope and one due to brittle plastic that broke. At $65 + shipping per unit, they’re quite pricey. Also, I’m trying to avoid stainless on this boat.
Has anyone used these spool style ones? Nothing can snag, they’re made of acetyl which will not get brittle/break, and they’re “flush” when not in use as only the base remains…
I just want to do this once and be done with it.

Had the V marines but don’t love them. They look nice but they don’t hold the pole very well in rough water so you have to remember to strap the pole in with the bungie when you run or trailer. My current setup is the Accon on the bow and the Stiffy holders at the mid section and stern.

Did you have enough “bend” in the setup? This boat had some cheap PVC holders that looked like they wouldn’t hold at all, but due to the bend in the pole, the pressure the pole put on them was sufficient in holding the pole in place.

Depending on how you look at it, yes and no. The V Marines were installed by East Cape when it was built, and they do a lot of these. You should only have to put so much bend in the pole to keep it in place. Only happened once then the bungies went on everytime after that. They work fine but weren’t my favorite. The nice thing about the Vs is you can remove them for a day of cruising, they will probably last longer, and you’re not cutting a hole in your deck. I only have the Accon up front to keep everyone’s toes intact and to prevent the fly lines from getting hung up. The two rear clips see no foot traffic. Unless you’re hung up on the looks the Stiffy holders are functionally better, cost effective, and hold up well.
If installed properly the VMarines work fine. Have them on my flats rig and dont need the bungees. Be aware if you dont take them off occasionally and lube the threads, they will set up and become permanent.
Note if you use the Accons in the link, you will have to plumb drainage. Plus your installation has to be perfect the first time. No margin for error as you are cutting into the deck.
This Accon model is surface mounted, which makes them easier to install. Have them on my skiff and they have work beautifully

BTW, when using pole holders, always have the foot of the pole toward the bow

What do you mean “if installed properly?” That mean the arc of the pole?
Thanks for the note on the threads. Some good anti-sieze compatible with the plastic should help.
And, I’ve never heard why…why put the foot toward the bow?

Exactly right …
Check out “Big Sky Precision Sto Pro” quick release push pole holders. Have not seen these on a boat yet, but saw them at Islamorada’s Boatworks’ shop in Edgewater Fla.
Cleanest set-up I’ve seen yet.

I absolutely would love to check them out. Not even terribly priced for what they are!

I have the Accon type. My boat came w/ the full circle holder on the bow and it was a pain to get the push pole in and out. When on the water I carried the pole backwards (handle end out the stern). When on the road I put the handle end up front but had to make sure the truck didn’t block the pole from sliding into the holder. I cut part of the circle out and filed it smooth so that I could easily get the pole in and out. They work great. I’d recommend them.
Looking at the Big Sky retrofit receiver gave me an idea that I didn’t see available on their web site. They could make a quick release tie-down insert for their receiver for mounting and securing your cooler. I got some flush mount tie-downs that I really like and they are not a tripping hazard when the cooler is not there. However, it was a chore (for Cracker Larry — Thanks again Larry!) to install them. The retro fit receiver looks pretty easy to install.
Take a look on their Facebook page.
