Just picked up a used 14ft jon boat with 25hp electric start motor. I couldn’t get the owner to negotiate with his trolling motor included.
Just wanted to see what other jon boaters use to get around quietly in fishing holes and shallow water. 90% of fishing will be Wando river, Creeks around IOP Sullivans Island and Bulls Bay up by Buck Hall.
Push pole- Do you just stand on back bench when using or do you rig a platform?
Oar or paddle-seems like you would be doing more work than the reward when fighting currents.
Trolling motor-Transom or bow mounted? Maybe overkill for 14ft jon boat.
I saw somebidy had like a hybrid push pole/paddle, it looked like a push pole, a little shorter than most, had an interchangable end that you could put a small paddle on,a spike or a foot. Looked pretty cool. i wouldn’t want to push a boat across a big flat on a ergular basis, but for teh ocasionable push or paddle to get you off a bar, it looked ideal.

I went the short shaft bow mount route. With this setup, I could shrimp by myself if I wanted. Doesn't take up too much space on my 14' and I can remove it if I'm just going out for a ride on the river.
DueSouth - that looks like the Lynches River in Effingham, yes? I sent you a PM to ask you some questions.
So as not to hijack, I have a 24lb thrust motor bow mounted on my jon boat. I bolted a bracket onto the bow so that it will accept a transom mount-style troller. Can be used at either end depending on need.
have a 48# on my jon. its indespensible for redbreast/bream fishing, and chasing schooling reds and trout. the higher thrust gives me ability to get to the hill if my motor ever was to quit. knock on wood!
