I just got back from a deployment recently and finally got out and cleaned my boat up and cranked it up for the first time in over 6 months and to my surprising it actually cranked first time. It’s a 2005 90 HP Mercury 2 stroke. Everything was good until I went to throttle up and nothing happened except for it kicking into gear and the prop spinning. The motor didn’t rev up whatsoever no matter how far i pushed it up and the same thing for reverse. I’m not very knowledgeable with mechanics, so if anyone has any input on what the problem is I’d greatly appreciate it!
I’d guess fouled carbs. What say you Chris V?
are the linkages still attached?
No one knows if YOU are THE village IDIOT or not until YOU open your mouth and speak!!!
If you had some reving when you throttled i would say carbs, but since its only going into gear i would say linkage.

the throttle cable has become detached or is broken or there’s a linkage seperated
remove the cover from the engine and follow where the cables enter the lower cowl. the throttle cable will attach to the bottom of the long vertical arm on the side of the engine. the lower part of the arm should move forward as you increase the throttle. if this arm does not move when you throttle up the cable is broken or has come loose at the control box - you should be able to easily see the connection at the engine. if that seems to working normally it is possible that the linkage from the throttle arm to the carbs has come loose (they just snap into place). good luck and report back.
Thanks a lot for the help and input, I checked the throttle cable and it moved whenever I pushed the throttle up. It just doesn’t rev up. Where is the linkage connector to the carbs located at and i’ll check that out.

there should be a rod with 90 degree bends on each end that is held in place by white nylon clips. this rod should connect the throttle / timing advance arm to a boomerang shaped cam. that cam pushes on a roller that moves the butterfly linkage on the carbs.
Alrighty, I took a good hard long look today and nothing seemed to be disconnected. I notice that when i push the throttle up there is no movement from the linkage. So, obviously something ain’t connected, but I can’t seem to catch what it is. I have to manually move the linkage up to open up the carbs. I carefully looked over everything today looking for the reason why it’s not all linked together, but saw nothing disconnected. Any other ideas or places I should be looking more carefully?

you have 2 cables
shift and throttle
get someone to shift from nuetral to wide open throttle while you watch the linkages
first the shift linkage will move, then the throttle linkage will move
if it doesnt, you probably have a bad throttle cable
