Just bought the key west 2020 with a 4 stroke yami 115 . First two times out, no rel issues except a fuel sender not working. I’m ordering that tomorrow. Anyway, yesterday we take it out on the lake an pull the tube for a few hours. Boat and motor seem fine when we trailer and head to the house. Decide to go back today. As I’m leaving the no wake zone and start to accelerate, the engine just starts to run a bit rough and mostly bogs down. Just can’t get rpms up to 4000 and hardly any speed… about 15 or so. Will not even get close to planing. Just plowing. Play with the trim and no cigar. It’s like a sick puppy. A little hesitation, but not much, just very little power. After 5 mins we take it out and head back home. Buddy of mine knows a little about outboards , at least 2strokes, anyway, so he takes out the plugs and they look good. He does a compression check. All cylinders within 5 psi. We remove fuel filter and only see a drop or two of water in the bottom. We pull the fuel water separator and no water, just a little tiny bit of crud. We pull the fuel pump NAND can’t see any ugly struff, but who knows? Can’t understand how one minute it’s running great, the next it’s not. Any ideas?
Most likely your injectors need to be cleaned along with your vst filter needs to be replaced. Are you running e-10 gas in it? Reason inask is when i lived in Maryland there was no non-e gas and I would have the same problem as you are having about once a year. If you said there was a little bit of crud in bottom of filter I am sure one little piece clogged and injector or the vst filter.

I just got the boat from a marina where it was being sold on consignment. I’m looking at the last servicing done on it on 7/23/13, about 2 weeks prior to my purchase… It shows the following done (if I can make out the chicken scratch writing), 1. oil 2. gear oil 3. (4) plugs 4. (1)fuel filter ( $11.98), (2) fuel filter ($45.40)(???) 6. oil filter 7. seal ($2.85). Thats the parts. Then it shows work performed… “Service motor + grease ($145.00)” " Clean fuel system + vapor tank set up motor ( $760.00)"; Clean injectors + sonick (sp?) cleaner ($380.00).
Before my maiden voyage I pumped in 23-24 gallons of ethanol free gas at a pretty reputable station near my house. I did not check the oil as it had just been serviced. Ran it last Sat. and it was great. Ran it another 4 hours this Sat. and it was good. Then Sunday afternoon the boat is started, backed off the trailer and as I’m idling out all is fine. Get to the end of the no wake area and ease it down and it’s acting like it can’t wake up. Super sluggish. Just not wanting to gain any momentum and after trying to come out of the hole seeral times we feel a bit of hesitation intermittently. Went home and took some things apart with a friend , then back to the lake (nearly an hour drive one way), and put it back in and it did the same thing. One thing we did notice prior to our trip back to the lake was that when we pulled out the oil dipstick the level was above the maximum level by and couple inches. We drained a few ounces to bring it to t
Mine did the same after I had my fuel issue. Pulled the Fuel Water Filter, poured it into a pickle jar and watched the sludge settle to the bottom. Replaced the filter and it ran great until the sludge filled up in the filter again. Repeat now after every 15-20hrs and it is getting better. You don’t know what is in that tank, what was in that tank or if things were mixed.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I reached the mechanic that did the servicing on the boat prior to the owner putting it up for sale. He told me that he suspects that the injectors are clogged. Apparently, the owner used ethanol gas until recently. He also let the ethanol gas sit in the tank about a year to a year and a half prior to the servicing that I referred to in my last post. The mechanic advises that the owner chose to empty the tank of the ethanol himself to save money. He beleives that the guy left ethanol chrystals, and other junk in the tank. I did see some debris in the gas that I removed from the fuel water separator filter. He suggests that I clean the tank properly and then clean the injectors. Hope he is right. My question is, how difficult will it be to clean the injectors? My buddy has some working knowledge of this with 2 strokes, but hasn’t done anything to a 4 stroke before. I’m guessing that syphoning the chrystalized junk off the bottom of the tank until I get clean gas running thru the tube is the way to go , then spray clean the screens in the injectors with carb cleaner?
spraying the injectors isn’t likely to do much good, but it wont hurt.
when you pulled the fuel sender you could have dislodged crud
the stuff that was in the filter could easily be in the injection system

Chris, should I take the boat to a shop for them to clean the injectors or can they be taken off and sent to someone to do it? I know youre in the business, and, ofcourse I’m trying to do this as reasonable as possible, but don’t want to do again what the previous owner did… What would you suggest the best route to be?
You said the oil level was high. Did it seem thin and smell of fuel at all? It may be making oil. Fuel lift pump diaphram may be leaking. There may be a possibility of oil pump damage if this is the case. Just a thought since so much checks out good.

Don’t recall smelling a fuel smell. I did get oil all over my hand letting some out and can’t remember a fuel smell.
injector renew
google them
you can send the injectors and have them flow tested and cleaned

That’s what I was thinking. First I’m going to completely empty the poly gas tank and remove it from the boat and clean it out big time. I have a pressure washer so I was thinking of using that and just letting it dry out and reinstalling. I guess the pick up hose may need to be cleaned, huh? Then get the injectors cleaned and put back in. How do I save any of the gas? I put in 24 gallons of ethanol free gas. I was told the other gas currently in the tank was too, but … ??? Probably have 45-50 gallons of gas. Do you think I will have to have the VST cleaned again. It was just done less than 7 hours ago @ over 700 bucks according to the last owner’s bill. Yikes!
Also, Chris, I reordered the 9 inch sender from WEMA vs the 10" so I would have some gas to play with.
Update on the situation for the record… We emptied, removed and cleaned the fuel tank. Was a bit of a bugger to get back in, but we did. Pulled and cleaned the injectors. Replaced the fuel water separator filter. Drained the VST. The VST had water in it. 25 gallons of ethanol free along with Startron…
Sea trial on the lake and the boat ran like a scalded dog for 30 miles. Thanks to all for the help.
My F115 did the same thing not long after I bought it. It had not been run much or run recently. Sent the injectors off and all is good for the last two yrs.
