I have used 1" sch. 40 PVC for my shrimp poles forever and have never had any trouble from DNR for having them. I was wondering if anyone else has ever been told they were illegal to use. The regs clearly state:
No more than 10 poles can be used per license per day. Poles must be marked with reflective tape and may not exceed 1-inch in diameter and each pole must have a numbered tag attached which corresponds with the shrimp baiting license.
Problem with that is…a 1"PVC pole is about 1-1/4" O.D.
^ Yea and any thing less would bend in the current and go out of sight. I didn’t see but I heard DNR gave a handicapped man a ticket for his bamboo poles too large in Diam.
Why on God’s Green Earth would the regulate the pole diameter?? Are they making laws just to make laws?? I use bamboo, and I have never been hassled about the diameter. Bamboo is free, and I ain’t changing. GD absurd.
I have allways used sched 40 pvc and have been checked many times throughout the years and never had any problems. About 10 yrs ago I asked the question about pvc to the dnr in colubia and was told that 1" pvc was fine to use even though it did measure slightly over 1".
I was one of the few that lobbied before the Shrimp Baiting Law went into affect. DNR insisted that any marking device over one inch in diameter would be a Navigational Hazard. That is why it is stated the way it is in the regs. I tried to get them to take it out of the regs since the marking devices should be removed or not left unattended each trip. I tried to get them to fine the permit holder of marking devices if they were found to be unattended, because that would make them possible navigational hazards. They never added that because they said they did not have enough officers to enforce that.
Lots of other stories I could tell about this law being born. All I can say is be glad you got what you have because if it weren’t for me and a few others it would have been outlawed in this State!
I’ve asked DNR about 1" pvc … Bothe DNR officers I spoke with were fine with it. One said it was “Spirit and Intent” as long as you didn’t try to pass off 2" PVC or bull**** them. My set of PVC is 8 years old. I’ve been ispected 2 times. The only thing I was kinda called out on was my end caps on all my poles aren’t glued on. DNR kinda frowned when I told him its so I can swap out lisence tags with my buddy so we dont have to reset poles. Just to explain; my friends and I fan out in 3 or 4 boats and check size and numbers in different spots. If someone has a hot spot and has coolered, I call em on the radio and we swap tags and he runs my poles on his lisence.

The reason is many people leave their poles behind on God’s Green Earth for others to hit with their boat. Nah, I don’t think they make laws just to make laws.
DNR folks happen to be somewhat over the top at times I have found. Sometimes common sense with them doesn’t seem so common.
Don’t get me started.
That has not been my experience. As many times as I have been checked by our state DNR they have been professional, pleasant, courteous, and totally reasonable. And I extend the same courtesies to them. What I have experienced at times as unreasonable and even unknowing, are the Federal Agents. Can’t say why that is, but they don’t hold a candle to our state wardens
The biggest problem I have with PVC Poles is the metal conduit at the bottom end, they rust and break off and get left behind in shallow water and tear the hec out of my net. My buddy also hit one with the boat and tore the bottom a brand new one.
