These are the results of my son’s first attempt at aerial fishing photography. He was flying a dji flamewheel 450 quadcopter, with fatshark fpv goggles, and a gopro hero3 on a gimbal. We are going to continue to refine and my son hopes to make a business out of this in the near future (depending on what the FAA decides about the rules).
That’s pretty awesome!
Next you’ll have to figure out how to get a live feed to your boat so you can just find the schools from the air!!

x2 - i want one to scout flats without spooking the fish
shoot, might be able to use it like a kite rig to drop a long distance mud minnow delivery
so, is that a drone or a manned vehicle?

Very cool Do yall fly it off the boat or from shore? Seems like it could be a health hazard landing it on the boat:question: I saw a news article a few weeks ago where a couple Navy sailors were killed by a drone landing badly on their missile frigate. A flats boat might be tricky for that. Maybe a tethered balloon would be safer
Nice pics, neat idea. I’d wear a helmet:wink:

Good Stuff, could be an expensive landing though

You caught fish or not?
For this first trip we did fly from the shore. We’ve only been flying it for a month but I’m comfortable with landing it on my boat (pretty wide open deck). The quad is only about 18" across and moves pretty slowly. It also has several safety features that help like if he loses radio contact, it will slowly return to where it was initialized and hover 5 feet off the deck. I am worried about a electrical problem where the quad falls in the water ($$) so we are working on a simple float system. It wouldn’t take much to come up with a system for scouting, out of the box the gopro can wirelessly connect to a phone with a limited range. With the FPV goggles my son has a real time view of whatever the quad is “seeing” with a range of about a mile and its just more $$ to be able to fly and see as far as your battery will take you.
Did catch three reds on a flat close to where those photos are taken!! All caught with an electric chicken paddle tail grub on a 1/8 oz on an incoming tide. Fish were schooled up pretty tight but actively eating.
Cool stuff!

That would be awesome to get film of someone fighting a jumping tarpon with that thing. Cool pics!
That is one of the cooler ideas I’ve seen. I agree, it’d be awesome to film a fish fight from water back to the boat.

Neat idea. I cringe to think of a future where these things are buzzing around everywhere like bumble bees. Give me a headache to think about.

The entire package is pretty pricey and like anything the final cost would depend on whether you bought the “stradic” or “sahara” version of each component. I think you could produce a “sahara” version for maybe $250 and the “stradic” for $2000. DJI is the most popular company making these things and they will sell you a complete package for about $1100. Luckily he had most of the stuff already since he flys RC planes. The quadcopter was $300. You can get them for around $100 on ebay but he went for a “name brand” DJI package. You would then need to add a RC radio receiver/transmitter (can get both for around $50 for a cheap one), and a gopro or similar “action” camera. He also uses a gimbal ($100) to stabilize the image and FPV goggles ($200), but they are not absolutely necessary. He accumulated all the stuff over some time between his money, birthday and Christmas gifts. Took awhile, but he is very happy with the setup.
Awesome, thought about doing this but my brother was not too fond of flying his drone over the water. Not as nice as your set up granted but still an expensive toy to fly over the saltwater. The FAA banned charging for photography but my brother still uses it for real estate and charges for “editing” the photos. Sounds like your son could work the system in a similar way?

I am getting into the exact same thing with my guiding business up in Richmond, Va. Hoping to shoot videos of clients fighting fish. These toys are awesome and possibilities are endless
