I do not know if I’m barking up the wrong tree here or not. I’d like to try to catch a jack or two when the time is right. The problem is, I am not sure if it’s feasible in my small boat.
I have a 14’ semi-v with only a 7.5hp on it (and trolling motor). Max speed in the best conditions is around 15mph. The semi-v does make choppy water a bit easier to deal with but not necessarily “safer”.
Do jacks ever show up around somewhere like Remleys, where I could putt around within a couple miles of the launch on days with good weather? I see a lot of small jon boats going in there when I’m there netting up bait. I prefer to stay up in the creeks and flats for most of my inshore, but the itch to chase some jacks has always pestered me.
Since I do not know how jacks behave around here, I figured I’d ask y’all.

Jacks are common, or at least they were, between Drum and Daniel Island.

Stretch, this place isn’t the same as it was when I left in 06. I remember catching so much stuff in the surf and up in the rivers and such. Now that I have a 4 year old son, I’m having a hard time catching anything but sunburns and skeeter bites.
When would peak jack season typically be?

From what I’ve read, summertime. I’ve read and seen reports from around DI & DI and some dude on here reported catching some by 41 bridge last summer
When the Spanish are in the harbor, the jacks are too. Fish around drum island. We have had good luck with large topwater plugs. Better have good equipment or you wont get it to the boat. Late July and all of August is when your best shot is.
Do the spanish come up to Drum island as well?

Jacks were regularly caught around Drum and the castle generally at dawn or right after a rain storm when the harbor goes slick. I still keep an eye out for them when the conditions seem right to me but the days of making a trip just for jacks seem to be gone. I know of one person who got one last year and I saw a few caught down south while cobia fishing. They will be back one day hopefully:smiley:
Wow. Any idea why they are so rare now? I remember back in 2002-2006 (when I lived here last) I read reports of jacks all over the place, was seemingly one of the surest ways to have some brawler fun.
