I’ve been working on a bout for awhile that the decals ran out a couple of years ago. Just got the motor running again and want to river test. Here is the question. Can I put it in the water and run across the river and back to see if it is going to run? It runs in a barrel but we all know that is different from under a load. wanting to use Leeds Ave landing since it is close by and if I have to paddle it might not be too bad. It is not my boat but I have the registration.

I believe that all you need is a “up to date” Bill of Sale and the old registration card. That should get you in the water until you can get the registration updated.
This could be wrong, but I believe you have a few days “grace period” to get the paperwork updated after the sale.
May want to call down to Columbia for clarification.
Im4 the closest thing to me is the Ashley at 526. RDW the boat is my son’s but he is out of state working. Don’t really want to take it to GCR to test.
Technically if the registration is expired, you could be cited. I would hope that any “reasonable” DNR dude would see the circumstances for what they are and give you a pass but, it all depends upon the officer that stops you. It really is no different than operating a car with dead tags. You may get away with it unseen, you may get stopped and get a break or a ticket.
CC, when are you wanting to test it? If i am around the house i can let you into our neighborhood landing @ Drayton on the Ashley as my guest. If you are just going to do a quick test trip you probably won’t even have to move the truck from the ramp. The landing is the first on the left north of the train trestle on the Ashley and i have seen LEO’s exactly twice north of that span in the eight years i have lived there and both of those were on major boating holidays. Might have to wait for an outgoing tide because you won’t want to risk having to drift back through the trestle if you run towards the harbor on an incoming.
