I am entering into a partnership on a sporty. We do have a captain, but eventually when I learn the ropes I would like to be able to operate/Captain the boat myself If I so choose. My partner (my dad) is telling me the insurance company he purchased our policy through says that only a licensed Captain can operate this boat. We are not talking about charters mind you, just cruising or fun fishing. is this normal…? I have 1000 hours of mating on a sporty, and thousands of hours operating large twin engined CC’s. Any input is welcome. Thanks.
What kind of boat and what length? Sounds like utter BS to me.
When I want you to have an opinion, I’ll give it to you…
PM gotchacovered, this site! He sells boat insurance! He won’t lie to you!
44’ Davis express. I have bought insurance from Lee and will e mail him if he doesn’t see it or I get the right answer.
We didn’t have that requirement on our 55. If I remember correctly you only have that if you are operating for hire.

Never heard that, but you can get a discount if the captain is licensed with some insurers.
That’s a good point. Get your six-pack if you have to for the discount.

Take the Sea School classes and get the 6-pack (OUPV). Save money on the insurance.
Olde Man Charters
It is not a bad idea to at least get your six pack before running a boat that size. Also when you get to that size boat the role of the captain shifts to spending more time on preventative maintenance than actually driving the boat.

We have a Captain with a 500 ton. He will help with the upkeep. Great dude…A member here. I’m talking about every now and again. I think I’m gonna do the sea school, but being that we have a Captain that will run the boat 85% of the time, I don’t see the need in me maintaining a 6 pack.
Sounds like your dad doesn’t want you driving the boat…
I have a friend that has a full time captain on his sporty. He does it so he has someone “legally responsible” while they are fishing/heavily drinking while trying to fish …

A captains license is required on all for hire vessels. If you pay a fee to fish The boat must have a USCG license holder on board . If you have a OUPV (6 pac) you are limited to 6 passengers. If you carry more than 6 passengers you need a 100 ton USCG master license or higher. Your insurance will check this, but the USCG waits until after the accident . Sea School teaches, tests, sets everything up in a user friendly package. Well worth the $$$$
Knowledge is power. Get the license.

Actual boating prowess is on the Honor System. Is a pretty good course though, had a couple “lake” & bass guys doing it for good measure. Was funny to see them argue with the instructor as to why they should have to learn to plot a course.

Even on lakes and any navigable waters a USCG license is required for “for hire” vessels or charters. Like I said before, Possession of the license probably will not be checked until after the accident.

Thanks for any input that was helpful. As I stated 2/3 times. This is not a strictly “for hire” vessel. It will be chartered about 15 or 20 times a year, in which a Captain who has as much experience as anyone I know including the Navy will be at the helm. I’m talking about non charter situations in which I wanna fish or dive with family or friends. I’m 45 and have 1000’s of hours at sea. This was an insurance question…Not a question about my relationship with my father or my worth as a non licensed boat captain. I will be obtaining the 6 Pack in the next year and a half so that I can run said boat out to the ledge and back. Thanks for your participation…Consider this thread closed…
Redstripe, PM me if you need a mate too. I have my 6 pack and am currently working on Masters license for 25 ton. Been on the water here my whole life.
I also would highly recommend the Sea School OUPV course. Buddy Ward is a good guy and you will learn things about boat safety you never considered before. I did at least.
