Question to L.E.O.s, especially traffic

What is the current law regarding a used vehicle just purchased as far as tags go. I know you need to get tags right away, but the law used to state that you had up to 45 days to get this done. In the meantime, you just needed proof of insurance and a bill of sale/title in the vehicle. Has this changed? If so, what is the current law?

not sure what the law says but they have paper 45 day plates at the dmv.

I think thats right. I just bought a used vehicle and had plates in hand within an hour. Just got to go to the county offices and pay your prop tax, then bring that receipt to DMV. You will walk out with tags

Yes, I know you can get tags right away, but in some cases, there are circumstances that prevent someone from getting the tag right away and there is/was a grace period of 45 days. I heard it changed and is now 48 hours, but do not know for sure. Does anyone know?

There is no “grace” period. You either transfer the tag from your sold/traded car, go get a permanent tag, or get a temporary 45 day tag. It is against the law to drive a car without any tag, and you will get pulled over. The officer may let you go if you show proof you just bought it and were transporting it home or to the DMV, but if you get pulled 2-3 days after buying it, you might get a ticket.

They started cracking down on this a long time ago, back when people would steal a car and put a hand written note on the back that said, “Applied for”.

^ This! Technically if you buy a car from an individual, you have to either go get a paper tag or regular tag to put on it, or have it towed. Dealers have the authority to issue tags but they cannot let you leave their lot unless you have proof of insurance on that vehicle. This is a PITA!

PITA? Come on, how often do we switch cars that this is really an inconvenience?

I for one really like the fact it prevents some sex offender from driving through my neighborhood without a tag, or some crack addict from stealing a car and joy riding committing felonies without a tag to trace the suspect.

Some laws just plain make sense, and this is one of them.
