I usually fish areas where there is not a lot of boat traffic. Recently I started to venture out in some of the bigger rivers around Beaufort. Most of the boaters are courteous and slow down, but I got to thinking about what if they did not and sent monsoon wakes my way. What is the best position to place the yak to keep from possibly taking a spill? I was thinking bow to the wake, but help me out. Thanks.
usually i would bow into it, but too big of a wave and you will be very wet, and still in the yak, if you know what i mean.
I agree wholeheartedly & even if it is a big wave better to be wet than capsized. Another option if your close to the marsh grass is to paddle into it (the marsh grass) I’ve done this before to keep from being swamped.
I go bow first also … I wonder if there is a way to change the “slow down for yaker” attitude …for me …I think it would be better if they kept thier boat on plane (smaller wake) …maybe they will never understand that, while trying to be polite, they are actually sending a bigger wake when they take thier boats off plane.
I drift fish the Cooper a lot for catfish and keep a short paddle to maneuver BOW first into the wake as needed (frequently thanks mostly to bass fisherman who won’t slow down). Closest I came to going over was when I was anchored off the stern and a series of large boats sent wake after wake into me - being anchored off the back greatly reduced my ability to maneuver… got wet but didn’t flip.
