Questions for Charleston newcomers

I have wanted to move to the Charleston area for years, but can’t get the wife out of Atlanta. Recently we have decided to move out of the US for two years. When we return, I think I can persuade her to move away from Atlanta, and hopefully to Charleston.

I have Charleston built up in my mind to where it is Heaven on Earth, but I realize that every place has its pros and cons. The main reasons I want to move are: 1. Water, water everywhere; 2. Not too little, not too big, but just right; 3. I have always liked SC, especially the Low Country; 4. I like the people; 5. It just feels right.

For those of you that have relocated to the Charleston area, please answer one or more of the following questions:

  1. What has been your biggest surprise (good or bad)? “I thought that living in Charleston _____, but ____.”
  2. What would you do differently if you could roll back the clock?
  3. Complete this sentence: “I really like living here, but I miss ____.”

It’s great in Charleston but I’m worried it will be overrun in the next 5-10 yrs. it’s getting congested now. Wait till they build 80,000+ new homes.

That is the problem with living in such a desirable area. My wife and I have talked about retiring down there but lately I have had some misgivings. It almost seems like too many people want to live there.

No doubt the place will price it’s self out. More people more services mean more govt which equals more taxes. Throw in the climbing insurance premiums, flood coverage and property taxes one has to wonder is it better off renting than owning.

Agree, getting too congested. Traffic can be miserable whether you are in James Island, West Ashley, Mt. Pleasant or elesewhere. Downtown is always packed with tourists, can be very frustrating to go there. I’ve grown up here and have seen the changes. I think around year 2000 it was perfect population wise, think it may be all downhill from here.

Bear in mind that I’ve lived in Atlanta for 30+ years, so the traffic and congestion may not seem so bad to me.

Moved here 2 years ago it’s the only place I’ve ever lived where I feel content. Suggestions: get a boat, get a good pair of sunglasses live the good life.

Traffic is nothing in Charleston, especially if you have lived in a large city like Atlanta.

Sweet, I am sure we can work out a work/rent deal. Karen is pretty handy around the house and my Rap/Raggae club only meets twice a week so that shouldn’t be a problem.

My only advice is:

If you are leaving where you live because you hate it there, don’t try to change our place when you move here.

It’s always infuriating to hear people move to the Lowcountry because they love the way it is, only to complain that stuff ain’t done the way it was back home. Well then, if it was so great back home, why did you leave?

/my rant’s over.

this is exactly what happened in Florida. everyone moved down to get away from the NE, then set up these communities with all kinds of rules. i got fined 3 times in one week visiting.

but to answer the OP, i do not live in charleston, just a little south. traffic is not too bad most of the time. i like to visit every few weeks because they have all the best shops.

Being from the canadian border I have noticed alot of differences between there and here. Although I don’t think I’m guilty of what you speak of I have heard it before and have always thought people were a little touchy over this. That was until a couple of months ago when a couple of friends from England started to tell me how much more evolved their country was because citizens are not allowed to own guns and how they don’t have problems with mass shootings. I experienced anger, the desire to tell them to move back and some insight on the very issue you mentioned.
