Questions from a new guy

Hey, everybody! I have fished for freshwater fish quite a bit, but this summer I’ll have my first chance to surf fish at Edisto. I have a few questions, and I’m hoping y’all can help me out. I’d imagine they are pretty simple for experienced folks, but I am completely new to this.

Terminal tackle–I’m thinking I’ll fish one of the rigs with the weight at the end with a hook or two off of droppers above that. Should I tie a barrel swivel on and then tie the leader and hooks onto the swivel?

Can I buy fishing rigs like that down there? I have the rods, reels, and line already; I just need to get the stuff that goes on the end.

Also, who might I talk to down there for pointers on fishing? I’ve searched here a little bit as a lurker, but I haven’t really seen a go-to business for gear or advice.

I may swing by Haddrell’s on the way down, but I’m not sure about that. I’ll have my family in tow, and they may be road weary.

Thanks in advance.

go to either chas. angler or hadrell’s… they are both knowledgeable and eager to help.

Darl,
If you’re going to surf fish anywhere here, try posting this question in the Surf Fishing forum. Those guys are very knowledgeable and usually are willing to share. I’ve learned a lot from those folks. Good luck!!

Thanks for the replies. I’ll make it a point to get to one of those two stores before we hit the beach. And, if I post my questions in the surf and pier fishing forum, will I get hassled for cross posting?

Thanks again.

i used to have access to mother-in-law’s beach house there. then she went crazy and divorced the doctor who owned said beachhouse. access went poof. anyhoo…

here’s what i did. i am no expert

  1. catch whatever bait is in the surf w/cast net.

  2. keep it alive with a yellow flowthru bucket staked in the water on a surf spike. mostly finger mullet.

  3. 1 oz weight, 2/0 circle hook

  4. fish the rock groins on front beach. all sides of them. you will lose tackle.

i got a good variety of fish, esp in the fall. spottails, trout, jack crevalle, flounder, bluefish, small sharks.

if you’re more motivated than me, go net some fresh shrimp at one of the creeks. those work well.

fishingwithbob on this site will help you too. send him a note.

it’s a neat spot
