I have a 8wt CC Loomis, but not the GLX. Big difference for those who have casted both? Winston 8wts? Thanks.

i have thrown the GLX, not the CC. I like the action on Winstons bettter. it is more responsive and flexes a little lower in the rod but still has a “fast action.” They were the 1st to successfully use Boron in flyrods, and i am a big fan of the material. it recovers much faster than Graphite (ripple effect), hence tighter loops.
glx is much more difficult to cast, but when you gotta go yard into a stiff breeze, its the ticket… glx is nearly impossible to cast inside of 40ft with any accuracy, unless its way overlined… an amazing rod for certain situations/casters, always have a 9 glxcc rigged on my boat… look into the 1 piece proI, sweet, and cheaper, wont do airtravel
I haven’t thrown either rod in the 8wt, but casted both the Loomis GLX and the Winston Boron MX-II in the 12 wt. I preferred the Winston hands down to the GLX, as well as the Sage XI-2. Sage has since come out with the XI-3, but I haven’t done any casting with it.

Of course I am a huge fan on March Brown but I have casted the Xi-3… Holy Dookie Batman… VERY Nice… I saw MadMike throw a 100’ fly line AND 15 feet of backing with it…
I have an older legacy GLX 8wt 4pc. When I lost the tip top guide, they offered to replace the whole rod for $50 so I had them send me a new glxcc. I also found a replacement guide for my older rod and was able to cast both side by side. I much preferred my old rod. It felt lighter and crisper. The CC was definitely a slower action. My old rod has been my go-to rod for so long that I’m very used to it but it was a difficult rod to learn to cast. It isn’t a beginner’s rod IMHO. I don’t have any trouble with close casts and it is ferocious in a stiff wind. They don’t make the legacy ones in 4 pc. anymore so I’ll be devastated if I ever break it. I did have it reguided with the newer nickel titanium guides like the CC’s have. They are less susceptible to breaking and I didn’t ever want a broken guide to ruin a road trip.
There are alot of great rods out there… but you will have to peel my 8wt GLX out of my cold dead hands…
They are EXTREAMLY accurate! The 9wt is a whole other beast though… a little too stiff for even my taste (I like a stiff action)… but the 8wt loads easily and can send it to the moon if you need it too.
Winston makes a great rod and I have cast all of them… They seem to be slower, not necissarily action wise, but in how you have to cast them, I tend to be more aggressive with my cast so a slow rod doesnt work for me… they will lay it down if you treat em’ right though…
And for your question about difference in 3pc. cross current, GLX 4pc… huge difference. I own both. The 3pc is a little softer, and doesn’t have some of the hardware upgrades such as titanium guides, and carbon fiber reel seats. The GLX is better IMHO, but the 3pc is a really nice rod for the money…
