So yesterday we tore up the lower unit on an older model VRO Johnson about 10 miles out of Port Royal. Opted not to make a call for a tow since we were able to make a killer 2-3knts on the way back in but we got back (had some friends on standby just in case). As we were coming in the sound we passed a boat that had what looked like too many people on board (maybe or maybe not, it was a 20 something flat bottom Carolina Skiff and I know they can have some pretty large payload ratings). With all the cobia fishing going on right now skiffs in the sound are a common thing. We were just starting to make the turn up into the Beaufort River when we notice the USCG hauling butt straight towards the skiff while trying to contact the them on the VHF but no response. About 30 minutes later we get passed by the Coast Guard with the skiff in tow, and they were cookin’ too. It was a very calm day, that skiff had no problem in the sound. I though maybe just maybe they were headed to the hospital with the dock in downtown Beaufort, but no, they just kept on trucking, heard the pan pan as they cleared the Ladys Island swing bridge with the skiff still in tow. Didn’t appear to be any sort of medical emergency, boat didn’t seem to be sinking or anything like that either. I was under the impression the USCG will not come help unless someone is in imminent danger. So what gives?
