Had a great day out diving with Realfish, MissEmily, and John. With the tight weather window this Saturday we normally would have stayed on the hill but without too many more weekends left before grouper close, we decided to press on. Went out with John on his sweet new 31 Contender and made quick time to the spot with a pair of Yamaha V8s pushing us. The sea conditions kinda sucked but we made it work and did our dives pretty quickly in ~85’.
From what I can tell, the gag grouper seem to be massing around 65 to 90’. Not much going on during the first dive besides a stud gag and a lobster that wouldn’t leave its hiding spot. It got better from there and we quickly hit our limit on gags and had a few lobster, sheepshead, and trigger fish as well. Great day on the water. Grouper burgers and left over thanksgiving ham sandwiches kept us well fueled.
The butterfly jig was popular. There were also huge schools of bonita and I hooked one on the jig and it was a great fight.
Another turtle…
Pile of meat from one grouper

Jordan forgot to mention that the lobster were BIG!! He must be hesitant to post pictures due to the Little Havanna Internet Police. Anyway, here’s a beast we wrestled out of one of BugCatcher’s favorite holes that fell victim to a steamer, broiler, and lots of garlic butter…

I posted all I took. I didn’t take as many pictures this time because you all were bustin my balls about shooting the fish with my camera and not a gun. I’ve gotta get my camera mounted on my gun. And a new gun but that’s a different story.

FISH FOR THE FUTURE:
Selective divers set their sights on only those few prize game fish they will enjoy eating
I imagine it was somewhere in the sixties, I wear a 5/7 farmer john/jacket with shorty legs and a hood. I used to wear it year round into February diving the upper fifties degree water.
It was about 62 but felt fine. I wore my 7mm with 1mm hood. I dive that hood all year to keep the stingers off my face and to keep the fish from biting my ears.
Thanks for the gun vic! I won’t have to leave the boat to shoot them now. We are almost certainly diving next weekend so please let me know if you can’t get to the BC by then. A hole a BC is a small price for lobster. I may need to come pick it up and dive it as is. Thanks.
