I’ve got a chance at two different motors. One is a 1994 evinrude 60 and the other is a 1987 40 hp yamaha. Both come with controls and props. Price is about 400 more for the yamaha. Owner of the yamaha says it’s only been used about 10-15 hrs a year, and it is SUPEr clean. Haven’t seen the evinrude yet but owner of it says that it has a new tilt/trim motor etc.
Buy the Yammy, don’t even look at the 'rude; forget about it as the yankees say. No contest for me…If the truth be known, the 'rude has had 4-5 times more repairs I’d bet; even the owner is braggong about what has been done to the 'rude.
The evinrudes from the 90’s are very good motors. Make sure your hull capacity rating can accomodate a 60hp motor!! Either motor should serve you well. There’s plenty of parts available for each.
One other detail. I had a 1995 Yamaha 40hp on my little whaler. The motor only came with a power tilt mechanism. No power trim. I had to run the motor completely down and could not “trim” up the boat when running out of the hole.
Please investigate whether the 40 Yamaha has power trim in addition to power tilt. I have repowered with a new 50hp Yamaha 2 stroke that does have power trim and I appreciate the feature.
Make sure the Evinrude has power trim and tilt as advertised. This is a very nice feature and will get you another two knots running at full throttle.
According to both owners each has both power tilt and trim. This will def. be checked out on site. Thanks for the info guys. Keep it coming. The 14’ mckee is rated for 70 or 75.
Nothing wrong with an evinrude; I ran the hell of them attached to Whaler 17 Montauks at college (along with all the other 100’s of midshipman) and never had one fail. I would go with it over the Yammy since it is a 70 and will push that boat a lot better. Other than than I would get the Yammy if it is in markedly better condition.
“Rude”…I have a 95 Johnson. It runs like a scalded dog. The Rudes and Johnsons were pretty much the same motor back then. And like Chris said…The parts are cheaper. The Yammas that are carburated seem to have problems with clogging up. Correct me Chris if I’m wrong. But, everyone I know says the older Yammys carbs tend to clog up alot and have to be cleaned and rebuilt. My 95 Johnson has NEVER had the carbs rebuilt or even cleaned. I use Sea-Foam, so that may have something to do with it.
