quick question

Does a fuel gauge need voltage? Or is it simply resistance based? According to a schematic when I rewired my bass boat it looked like the two wires coming from top of tank sending unit they go straight to the gauge? Thank you and sorry for the ignorance

guage needs power to it(purple wire), ground(black wire) and the sender(pink wire), the sender only needs ground and the sender.
