Quick question

Sorry for the age old question, asked every two weeks, however, I know the battle is ultimately an all around better reel, no doubt about it, but how do you like the penn fierce? I know the battle has the upgraded drag, but, I don"t know if I go enough to want to spend the extra $$$ if I got the 3000 fierce would it hold up well for my inshore species on my kayak? I really appreciate the help guys.

You will be fine then Feirce will do what you need it to do!

Long answer?

I dont have a big rod or reel and am new to the salt water and dont want to ruin my baitcasters.

Can I use the battle 3,000 and be decently fine if I get a big fish or shark. Will it ruin the 3,000 to man handle it fighting a bigger fish?

the 4000 holds more line than the 3000, that’s about the only difference that i know of. so if you’re fighting a big shark in deep water, you might get spooled on a 3000, not likely, but less likely if you have the bigger 4000 spool with more line on it

i prefer 3000 mostly just for looks & weight, so it doesn’t look like my inshore rod is a surf fishing rod ya know?

the 3000 though, tends to run out of line if i fish alot & get snagged, and then i never seem to have more line on the boat & have to call it quits. i’ve been liking my roommates 4000 lately, it’s definitely heavier but it casts farther & holds way more line

I’ve caught a few grown cudas on my Battle 3000. I think I could hear it laughing at the challenge.

with the drag set properly and enough space and line to fight the fish…possibilities are endless on what you can land with a 3000 or 4000 size reel…

I used to work on the PENN team helping develop the Battle and the Fierce. Both are great reels! The primary differences between the Battle and the Fierce is that the Battle has upgraded drag washers (HT 100), the Superline spool and 6 bearings. The Fierce has oil felt drag washers, no Superline spool with 4 bearings. Line retrieve, line capacity, and max drag are the same on both reels. If money is an issue…Fierce. If not…Battle. You’ll be pleased with either.

Yes fierce is fine for standard inshore. Although the battle is not very much more maybe $30 more

Alright, so I’m going to go with the Penn battle 3000. I have never used braid and I am going to try it out in the Penn Battle 3000. Im very interested in the sensitivity of braid and added line capacity.

Can I get some info on what pound line people use and rod selections for the Penn 3000?

I want a rod with lots of sensitivity for sheephead and but with the backing to man handle my first huge tarpon I dream of catching out my kayak as well. Don’t laugh, I’m serious. haha

I just switched to braid this year, and I will never go back to mono. You can literally feel everything with braid.

15 -> 20lb braid. i evn use 10lb on a few

I just purchased a battle 3000 about 2 weeks ago. I have 20lb power pro braid on it, and I have 0 complaints. I considered the fierce, but decided to spend a few more dollars and got the battle.

All fishermen are liers except me and you and I’m not sure about you.

I have been fishing a fierce 3000 for almost a year and half now and I have not had any problems with it and it has been dunked in the water from the kayak I don’t know how many times. I do run fresh water over it every time I am done fishing. I even went 6 months before I pulled it apart and cleaned it and only had a little bit of corrosion on the gears inside. The Battle does have a better drag or if you wanted to spend the extra you could go for the Spinfisher V.

Okay thanks everyone! I’ll probably get the 3000 fierce, unless I can get more money to get a battle (which im hoping for!)
