Same thing for us when we tried a couple weeks ago .

We did have something take off and give us a good run. When I set the hook he took off. ended up spitting the bait but when we reeled up the menhaden he was alive and kicking with la little slash on it. Thinking of it were a shark the bait would’ve been shredded. Any thoughts?

never caught a tarpon myself but any time i caught a shark the bait was shredded. however many times at home when i missed a bass while using a sunfish as bait the sunfish was still kicking if it was inhaled and spit out like a tarpon would. for the purpose of a fish story i say yup you had a tarpon

You can’t completely rule out a shark though. We had a school of them in clear, shallow water earlier in the year and you would watch them charge in and miss the bait but clip the line with a fin. Fought one for about 30 seconds that was only tangled in the line. Not a mark on the bait. Was kind of fun.
