Headed north to McClellanville today to visit some family and attend the Lowcountry Shrimp Festival. Checked out all the going’s on at the festival, then headed to my wife’s grandparents’ house. I carried the fly rod with me because they have a few brackish ponds on the property and figured it’d be a good chance to test out a new fly I tied up.
Assembled my rod and headed to the back of the pond where there’s a water intake. Made some casts, then saw some brush out towards the center and I knew there had to be a fish lying nearby. Dropped the fly out there, few strips, and this red hammered my fly. I buried the hook in the side of his mouth, and off he went.
A solid five minute fight ensued, during which he wrapped around a tree in the pond. I tightened the drag down and horsed him out. To say I’m pretty pumped would be an understatement. It’s my biggest red to date, and while he’s a pond fish, I still think it’s pretty damned cool.
