Rack and Pinion Steering.

I browsed the forums and if someone has asked this already then I apologize because i missed the thread.

I purchased a boat from a guy last year who stated that he just changed the steering out not to long before, well i fought the steering all season last year determined that it would be fixed before this season, It is so tight that you almost gotta hang on the steering wheel to get it to turn, Well i have disconnected it from the control arm on the motor and i can turn the motor with one hand like hot butter but even with the cable disconnected from the motor it still takes 2 hands to turn the wheel. I have done some research and the only thing i can come up with is that possibly the cable is to long and that the S motions its making as it runs through the gunnel is causing the cable to rub or something so i pulled all the access out of the back which was about 2 feet so the cable was straight and its still takes 2 hands to turn. I am only running a merc 115 on the boat and i am thinking about putting a rotary steering system back on it (cheaper than hydrolic ) unless anyone else has any ideas…

Thanks…

Sounds like you just need a new cable which is going to be relatively inexpensive. A rack system has plenty of mechanical advantane to turn what you have. Disconnect the cable from the helm and turn to make sure there is nothing binding at the helm. You should be able to push and pull the cable by hand when it is out, if not, replace.
