radar confusion

I’m wanting to put radar on the boat. really confused about all the different brands and price ranges. I want a dome and would like to keep the price under $2000. do they all have plug and play with a 5212? advice ??? recommendations?

Had Raytheon, Furuno, and Garmin. Raytheon was the most plug-and-play and simple (“novice friendly”). Furuno was a little more sophisticated but tweak sensitive. Garmin was simple but the pedestal on the array failed and had to be replaced twice (under warranty, though). They may have worked out their pedestal problems since then. The ehternet on the Garmin was a nice bonus for mutliple reasons. Check around on the forums on the web and see if people are still having problems with the Garmin pedestals. If they are not, and if you already have a 5212, I’d probably look into getting a Garmin dome. Otherwise, I’d consider a ray or a furuno. Hope this helps.

Simrad Broadband. Close range like no other.

What is a 5212?
I have a Raymarine. it works fine but I am just not a fan of the user interface, but it does work. Not sure what size boat you have but on smaller boats like mine the rocking of the boat makes it tough with close structure.

probly goin garmin

a radar is only as good as you can tune it.

21 Contender

you’re right on the tuning. lots of info on this site on how to get started. no doubt i will add to the questions

Definitly on the tuning as well! Also just as critical is getting to know the unit and what looks like what during times of hi visibility. You want to know just exactly what that bouy, jetty, other boat, etc… looks like on the screen in all conditions before one actually has to use it in restricted visibility.
