A friend of mine has a JRC Radar 1000 he said I could pretty much have. It appears to be an older unit although in good shape. My question is; is it worth the hassle of trying to figure out how to mount it. Then of course try to learn how to use it on a 22 foot that has only been to a few reefs to bottomfish. Ill probably get brave enough to go trolling one day if someone I know wants to go and can teach me what to do. I know with a single engine boat that it most certainly will not be an overnight trip. What all are these radars good for? Thanks for any info.
Don’t know anything about that radar, but if you ever do make it out on a trolling trip; radar works wonder when running through the river/sound at 3am and some old shrimp boat is sittin in the middle without any lights on. Had that happen to a friend last year.
I have a radar on my 23’ this weekend I was few miles offshore and could see the storm onshore and see where they were moving. For free…no question. and if you do run at night it is very useful.

The best time to learn your radar is during the day time… Get a good feeling for what objects look like on your screen in your day time and make mental notes about size, shape, speed, etc. What do boats look like? What do crab pots look like? What does a wake look like? What does rain look like? What does the jetties look like, etc? docks, piers, bridges, big creeks, rivers, sandbars, the harbor, buouys, etc… The list goes on…
Well thanks for all the info guys. Guess I’ll be trying to figure out how to mount this thing. One more question for now; I’m sure there will be alot more. This radar part is mounted on a pole, it was on a sailboat at one time; can I just mount it on top of my t-top.
If you decide that you don’t want to mess with it, I’d be interested in it. I have one just like it that isn’t scanning. The radar is spinning but nothing shows on the screen. I really haven’t had time to figure out what is wrong. I’m sure I will need a part or two.
As far as why to have radar, getting in and out at night, storms show up just like doppler radar, see boats congregated in one spot or in a line(school of fish or a weedline)
