Im thinking about heading to Murray in the morning, is there a boat ramp at the dam and where would you recommend me buying bait?
There’s a three lane ramp at the dam. For bait go to Ned’s bait by the Shell station or Lake World Near the dam. I’m not sure if anyone is still selling bait at the dock at the dam.

Also, you might need to run up the lake to find the fish. I’ve heard that they are moving up the lake early this year. If I were you I’d start around John’s creek and move on up lake if you don’t find anything at the mouth of it.
I believe Richard and David are selling bait only on Sat & Sun but not sure…

It was tough for me yesterday. I did a pull first thing with planers and corks. Before I got the spread out, I had a screamer! Got the fish stopped and began methodically working the fish to the boat. After 3-4 minutes, the hook pulled. I reeled in to notice my Gamakatsu mangled in ways I’ve not seen before. Must have been a heckuva a fish! Shortly thereafter, I boated a 25 incher that I eventually gave to Spoon. He was the only keeper of the day. After 2 hours of pulling with just the occasional short, I decided to go look for downrod fish---- nothing but shorts everywhere! Probably caught 30+, but no meat for the box. I fished upper mid-lake.
On the bright side, I need to fish every Carolina game and just listen on the radio. 52-7!

I fished around Spence and Goat with down rods. Couldn’t get my Lowrance to act right so I was unable to pick up any fish… My anchor wouldn’t drop so I decided to drift and even with the drift sock I was drifting too fast. I debated on going to Clarkes Hill or Murray and decided on Murray just because I need to learn that lake. Need to get me some boards too.
Them Gamecocks did put a whooping on them hogs! I also listened to it on the radio, I would rather listen to Todd Ellis than watch it on TV.
Boards seemed to be pretty good sunday. Had a buddy report he had 3 keeps and a number of shorts all on boards and said he could have done better but TM battery gave out after 2hrs. All fish on boards. FL’s were hit hard but no hook ups. He fished above spence but below shull.
that’s next (boards) for us … guess I’ll need to get some and figure out how to use them … and where … LOL
it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish now!!!

Upstate, Just to be clear I don’t normally fish for the stripers. I try to target largies and much prefer the taste of white perch to most other fish. The Spoonmaster nickname is because that’s my favorite way to put fish in the boat. Never knowing what is going to hit the spoons is half of the fun for me. I’ve even foul hooked a carp up to 14 lbs. before. What a letdown when I got that one to the boat. Also, I have caught big cats, bass, gars, white bass and some nice stripers, all on my favorite Berry’s spoons.
I do have a little insight into the stripers, mostly when they start hammering the spoons while I’m perch fishing, I figure they’re in my area and hungry. In my experience, it’s not too long after the small ones show up that the bigger ones will follow. In years gone by we’ve actually had striper guys ask, jokingly, if they could tie up to our boat, because we were catching nice keepers and they weren’t. I just told them to put some weight on their freelines and fish near the bottom. I almost always fish the spoons by bumping them vertically off of the bottom.
I might have to try that. I know of guys that do that on Greenwood. Thanks for the info Spoon, it’s always nice to have someone point you in the right direction sometimes.

Todd is getting better and better. He used to get so excited over certain plays that he would forget to say what happened or tell where the ball was:smiley: It’s nice to have all-time greats like Todd and Tommy Suggs calling our games. They are completely emotionally invested in what happens.
To make this relevant, I wish my fishing was as good as the football Saturday.

Fog, Just another thank you for the fun trips this summer. I still think that was the best medicine I could have had under the circumstances. It’s hard to beat being on the water with good friends. Then too, your letting me see your techniques and having the stripers and hybrids cooperate was a great learning experience for me. It’s nice to see someone sharing as much information as you do, not just with me but also on this site. Even nicer was the day on Clarks Hill with you and your Dad, watching him put fish in the boat. He might be getting a little older, but he’s still as tough as an old lightered knot. I plan to get him up here on the perch before too long.
You know it’s always my pleasure buddy! Many good times are ahead. You’ll have to get “Diddy” up there one evening on a non-golfing day. 18 holes tires him out pretty well, but he and Mamma are still doing good. I’m very thankful for that!
