Ran out the engine and now she is running awful?

So I for the first time ever ran all the gas outta the boat to see what her capacity actually was. Now I added a fresh 20 gallons and she is running awful. It starts and stops at full speed, and at idle she turns off?? I am assuming i kicked up a bunch of sludge and that’s the problem i guess? So what now?? I am thinking that i need to pull the fuel filer and either clean it (how I have no idea?) or replace it, and then also maybe change the fuel water separator filter?? Any help would be great, thanks so much!

yeah you may have plugged the fuel filter, making for running lean. Check the fuel filter.

If you have the option, put a generic inline fuel filter just prior to where it enters the motor. I don’t like having the fuel filter under the cowl (my motor has only a single screen incorporated into the fuel pump, which I think is a lousy idea). Having this as a first fuel filter means that if I get bad gas, filter #1 gets plugged. Mine is a cheap, clear one that I can see if it has junk on it.

If this doesn’t help, you may have a plugged jet.

Check your spark plugs too— clean them and check the gap.

Carb Job

I’m sure you sucked up all the deposits that were in the bottom of the tank. Surely needs a good carb cleaning.

OK so checked fuel filter and surprisingly it was super clean? Then i checked the fuel lines, and the plugs. Found one fouled plug with a bad gap and the other has a super loose Spark plug stud, strange since these are new plugs? So I swapped them for new ones. The problem persisted, then I found theses screws on the other side of the carbs, they have springs around the shaft of the screws and I adjusted them slightly. Not sure what these screws are or what their purpose is but now the engine is a bit better? I assume I will take her in for a carb cleaning but what about carb cleaner spray, is it worth it and where do you spray it? Secondly what about seafoam creep? I am home in Charleston till Wednesday so would either of these get me by or help till I drop her off? Thanks so much for everyone’s help!

If it swims throw a fly at it!

Carb cleaner spray won’t do diddle to clean out the jets unless you take the carb apart. Just shooting carb cleaner into the intake will just bypass the jets.

You can try running a stout concentration of something like seafoam in the gas if the motor runs well enough for you to fish.

Either way, NOTHING you spray into the intake (carb) won’t do squat to clean the carb’s jets, it will simply de-carbon the piston chamber for you (which is fine, but not likely your problem). You would need to run some sort of cleaner through the gasoline.

I think Chemtool is stronger than Seafoam (and cheaper), but Seafoam has a bit more reputation. Either one might help but are not likely to solve your problem.

May be as simple as needing a set of plugs. Could be coincidence. If you would have picked up trash as it ran low on fuel you would have seen it in the filters but you said they were clean.

yea filter was super clean, has just a tiny bit of sediment in bottom of the little filter cup. Changed 2 of the 3 plugs, it’s better but now not great?

Change the filters and take the carbs out to clean. You must have some settlement that clogged the jets.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”> Or… simply, water. A clean filter won’t show water. Even if you have water separator(s). I bet you can still have water in the bottom of the carbs (float bowls). I flush my carburetor float bowls a few times a year on my boats. Mine have large plug screws on the bottom or sides of the carb float bowls. Seems like every time I flush them they show signs of a bit of water. One boat has a water separator and the other is too small so, I dump the tank twice a year.

ChrisV might have a comment about water in the float bowls? I’d love to hear his opinion.

if seafoam and duct tape wont fix it …I agree most likely water

Don't forget about the hammer.

knowing what we are “working” on would be of great help

Of its an opti it could have blown and/ or not be running on all cylinders. Running Optis out of gas is very very bad. I did it once to my pro xs, LUCKILY nothing bad happened. Thank The Lord.

:question: ok you changed 2 out of 3 and it is running better. Change the other other and see what happens.

and if you had water it would show up in the filter cup. or should…
