If you follow thehulltruth. some people there have a few choice words for “Mark the Shark”.
I doubt that skate survived being hung up. Should never have left the water in my opinion.
Good point, I was thinking about that too. I’m sure he was more interested in the picture with his rare catch and couldn’t pass it up. Can’t be good for the fish.
Wikipedia reports it was not a Hookskate
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dactylobatus_clarkii
‘A notable hookskate was purported to be caught on November 25, 2013 near Miami Beach, but was later identified by George H. Burgess of the Florida Museum of Natural History as a roughtail stingray (Dasyatis centroura).’

Rough Tail Stingray is probably correct. But why anyone would keep it is beyond me. They live in very deep oceanic waters and are not a threat to anyone with half a brain (Steve Irwin comes to mind).
first thought when i saw the pic was roughtail, not rare unless they were referring to hoisting it by its face as the rarity. if a boga can hurt a 30lb redfish, i’m guessing this one suffered some internal injuries after its 4 hour “fight”.
also, classy move to put your own name and alias on your bait well.
