I have a Yamaha 90 2cyl carb. One cyl scored badly, no compression and the tech says the other 2 felt dry (compression OK)when he pulled the head. I am going to get it fixed so I am looking for opinions. Buy a re-manufactured powerhead or repair/rebuild mine.
It is a 2004 Yamaha with reasonable hours, probably below average hrs.
Re-Man warranty 1 yr, local shop 90 days
The shop said they may be able to bore and replace 1 cyl and leave the other 2 alone but cannot be sure until they tear it all the way down. Then they can make better suggestions about the situation. Thoughts on this also please.

Nothing wrong with rebuilding it. I have went that route before. It all depends on the skill level of the mechanic and using a good machine shop for the boring and machining. Don’t skimp and let them put the old bearings, etc back in it. I had a 150 rebuilt that ran like a brand new motor for years by a guy in Wilmington, NC.
Just my two cents

what caused the failure?

Here’s the whole story.
I was down in Beaufort and it was 5:00 in the evening. I needed oil for my '04 Yamaha 90 2s that rides on the back of my 198dlx Carolina Skiff, and being a stickler about oil, only wanted Yamalube. I took my gallon jug to a Yamaha motorcycle/waverunner/evinrude dealer (the only one open at 5:00). The guy looked at it and said “2M oil?” I haven’t seen this in a long time. Then the other guy said use 2W. They change the oil numbers all the time. I “assumed” they were right.
The oil tank was very low and I filled it up. The next day my sons ran down the river for about 10 miles and on the return trip he said it made a funny noise and shut off. No alarms just a hard to describe noise. It would start but only at a very rough idle. #1 cyl is scored no compression, 2&3 compression OK but mechanic said they felt dry but all he did was pull the head. The skiff was run hard for a week and OK then when the 2W oil was added, first trip it goes. Everything works OK until it quits, like light bulbs
.
Now my engine is blown. I looked at the Yamaha website and the 2W oil is not recommended for outboard motors. The dealer said he asked Yamaha and they told him it was 2s oil made for PWC but would not harm an outboard.
That is why I ask about a re-man powerhead or a rebuild, or scrap it and go Etec. I really do not know what caused it but am waiting on the mechanic to let me know.

not sure i would go etec, but a factory brand new powerhead is $1800 and labor should be around $750

It does make sense to go with a new powerhead. I think that is the smart play. The only thing I don’t like about the Yamaha 90 is that it is thristy, strong but thristy.
Something ironic. I had '99 Johnson 25 3 cyl do the same thing last summer. I also asked my mechanic about Yamaha oil injection, how reliable is it since I had the 25 let go. He said it was rock solid.
Chris, what don’t you like about the etec?

they try and push the 100:1 oil thing, and the no maint for 3 years, as well as the stories we still hear about the failures, and it all adds to “give it a few more years”
Yamaha never did get the 250HPDI right if you ask me, and this is th elast year they will be available.
yamaha oil injection is the best in the business
if you think the yamaha 90 is thirsty, you ought to run a johnson or a mercury

I went with a new powerhead and picked it up today. Starting the breakin tomorrow. Sorta like having a new boat.
Chris V you were right on the money with the pricing of the powerhead.

Chris,
Would the pricing be about the same for a 2000 Johnson 90? I’m in the same boat…my motor is shot/seized and need to get it fixed…
