Re-spool or add-on (braid on a reel)??

I “lost” about 1/3 of the braid on a 4000 size reel. Should I strip it and completely re-spool it or would it work to tie a new section of braid on to top it off? If adding a new section, what knot? I usually use an Albright.

Thanks

I would definitely tie on.

Tie on as braid isnt cheap. Just use the right knot, albright sounds good.

I would find a 3000 series reel I have that needs new braid and spool it with the 4k reel that has 1/3 missing. Id be sick if I hooked into a really nice redfish and lost it and 1/3rd of a spool of brand new braid because I just tied new braid to it. If at least I would just put mono behind the braid to backfill the missing amount. I would not tie it together.

if i had your money, I’d throw the hole thing in the garbage and start over.

hope yalls good up thar DF

Your call really, depends on how much line you had on originally, and if you’re comfortable risking losing a fish. If you add on more braid, use a uni to uni knot. It should be good to go as far as strength, but if you have the knot exposed frequently it might get chewed up over time and fail.

Thanks all for your input!

the bassmasters remove the outer 1/3 of line on their reels and re-spool with new line EVERY NIGHT- they join the lines together with a blood not when using mono, normally the outer 1/3 is almost 1/2 of your line capacity due to increasing diameter- I have caught some true monster spottails and never had them get more than 40 or 50 yards out.

so- how much braid does your 4000 class reel hold? isn’t 1/2 of that plenty for inshore fishing?

Providing you have enough braid left to fish with, reel the braid off of the existing reel onto another reel.

Tie mono onto whatever backing you currently have, and add enough additional backing to compensate for the braid you were “missing”.

Tie the braid from the other reel onto the backing. and reel it back onto the original reel.

Double uni-knot. I’ve never had one come undone when splicing lines.

How old was the original braid, and what condition. I had to uni to uni my shark line because of fray in the line and have fought big sharks with 40+lbs of drag and have had no issue. I would retie with what ever knot I preferred. The worst thing you will deal with is a slight bump casting and reeling in every once in a while and maybe a little more weed hang up.

poor people only have braid on the top 100 yards, mono underneath

Poor people also ask about adding to braid rather than stripping it and putting all new braid in it’s place.

The braid was only a year old and not heavily used. It was actually closer to half empty. I decided to tie on and see what happens.
