Reading Charts Help??

I am trying to understand my chart plotter {not talking about reading from the transducer)on my Lowrance. The numbers for depth; I am thinking those are at high tide? Am I correct?

Example the 11 I circled? That is at high tide, correct and the small number is that at low tide or it is 11.8 ft?

Thanks in advance:smiley:

:smiley:I know I’ll be corrected but I think all depths are given for mean low tide …

GW is correct. All measurements are based on mean low tide.

Thanks Ron , I would like to also know what the sub #s are…
I know just enough about reading the info provided on depth
charts to hopefully not ground out but would also like to understand
some of the other given info!!!

All depths are listed at mean low tide.

I was a Boatswains Mate and navigational petty officer in the coast guard, as well as a licensed captain. Never in my life have I seen a chart with two depth numbers like that.

I only know of some offshore charts that list fathoms and feet together like that, so the big number would be fathoms and the little number would be feet.

For example: 11,8 would be eleven fathoms plus 8 feet. One fathom equals six feet so that depth would be 66+8=74’

Does that seem like the correct depth for that location? If so, your plotter is set to display in fathoms

It’s 11.8 feet at mean low water. That means an average low over the last several years. The actual depth could be lower, but will usually be higher.

Can’t say, cause I don’t know, but I have to buy Larry’s answer, paper charts sometimes
Show 2 numbers like in example shown above. chart plotters aren’t considered on

Seems like it would be easier just to round down. Skip the 9.8 and just say 9 and ere on the side of caution. Good question though.

If your Navionics is not updated make sure you get the latest Sonar Charts. You’ll have to turn this feature on on your Lowrance. This will show you contour lines…ledges, holes, drop offs, etc.
