All ya’ll

I just came up from my dock. The reds were as they say “on fire”. The wife came down just before the rain started to check on us (me and our dog). I had just landed a nice red, about 20" I told her that was fish number 7 in 25 minutes of fishing. She said “or the same stupid fish seven times in 25 minutes”. As soon as number seven hit the water I threw the jig about 15 yards up the creek and it was hit as soon as it hit the water. I gave her the look and asked just how fast did she think that fish could swim.

It all put me to thinking. If you catch a fish, what are the odds that same fish will turn around and get hooked in the next few minutes?

Just wondering

BTW: all were caught on trout eye jigs with Z man electric chicken grubs.

I’ve seen a video of a flounder that got hooked, came off, and then the fisherman made a cast to it right after, hooking it again. So it’s possible.

Anything that pulls drag, right?

Not “technically” the same as what you’re (not your) asking, but I’ve caught the same bedding bass 4 times in one day. It was the challenge of it, but that fish would not leave the bed. So I decided to see how many times I could catch it.

Ive caught the same 14 inch red 5 times in less then 5 minutes. He had a super fat stuffed stomach with a bunch of shrimp whiskers hanging out of its throat. I am 100 percent positive it was the same fish from the bleeding hook marks. I was on a river fishing a small creek mouth with the high tide ripping out during september a few years back. I would toss him out behind me toward open water a solid 20 plus feet from where i would hook him. He would swim up current to the same exact spot. I actually moved spots because of catching him repeatedly.
Another time i caught a 18 inch red that had a line hanging out its mouth from breaking off while gut hooked and a broke off hook with a line hanging that was hooked in his lips. I caught him 3 times in like 2 hrs and this was in 50 degree water in january a yr or 2 ago. I was gonna keep him 1 day when i caught him and after like 10 minutes of him flopping in the cooler no ice just a cooler i decided if he could swim off still i will let him go because hes a survivor. I set him in the water and he kicked off like nothing ever happened and i caught him like 2 weeks later in the exact same spot healthy with no sign of the gut hooked line. This was all in that January and he had some distinctive dolphin or oyster scars which made him easily identifiable.

To answer your question in my opinion if you dont hurt them then it doesn’t have an effect on them. Also most fish dont really move as much as you would think and often frequent the same spots at the same time and the same areas hold fish year after year.

Depending where you are fishing, the chances are higher than you’d think… this guy popped off in some trees, a coue of minutes later he wasnt so lucky!

I’ve had one break me off just as previous post and recaptured him just a few minutes later with my rig and line still attached. It happens.

That’s pretty impressive! He must have been pretty hungry or mentally handicapped. I don’t think I could even bring in, unhook, and re throw that fast.

I can’t speak for Saltwater fish but I know I have caught the same bass and a couple of catfish more than once in a day.

I dont think handy cap would be that good of a hunter. Just a hungry sob. That is probably the fastest ive caught 5 reds back to back but ive definetly caught more than 5 trout in 5 minutes. I fish close and i keep my drag tight to get a good hook set so its got to be like a 18inch red to pull drag. I basically pitched the bait about 10 or 15ft and flipped him in and tossed him out the back of my boat and repeated. A 30ft cast is far for my fishing style, i can only throw light stuff like 50ft max and thats with the wind at my back. I can throw a 1/4 about 200ft on my light setup though. I often catch fish within 10ft of me. I hooked a red about 3ft from me in 2ft of water today but lost him do to not thinking 1 would hit that close since i just stomped around pulling my bait off oysters and i could feel shells crushing under my feet. I prefer fishing light with short accurate cast, a quarter ounce is heavy. I like 1/64 1/32 1/16 1/8 i only go heavier if conditons call for it ripping tide or heavy wind, both scenarios the fish spook less so 1/4 is ok to use.

Hooked a 44" red last fall that broke off right at the boat and on the way down bit my other line. Caught him on that one with my first rig still in his mouth…:sunglasses:

My brother and I along with his boys were fishing a small creek one morning. This creek had some bruiser reds that were hitting every time we cast at them. He had just landed a nice red when my rod and my nephews rod took off creating havoc. We both were fighting a big fish and trying to figure out whose fish we were going to net first. Come to find out, the fish had both of our hooks in his mouth. We had both caught the same fish.

Never again have we landed the same fish at the same time.

Made for a pretty cool trip.
