This is from a recent report. Take from it what you will. A few facts and then the link.
Among the findings are:
? Anglers landed just two percent of the total saltwater finfish landings compared to ninety-eight percent caught by the commercial fishing industry.
? Saltwater landings by anglers contributed three times more to the national gross domestic product (GDP, or value-added) than commercial landings.
? The recreational sector added $152.24 in value-added, or GDP, for one pound of fish landed, compared to the commercial sector?s $1.57 for a single pound of fish.
? Within the jobs market, the recreational sector made up fifty-four percent of all jobs, both recreational and commercial. This amounts to 455,000 recreational jobs compared to 381,000 on the commercial side.
? For every 100,000 pounds landed there were 210 recreational fishing jobs but only 4.5 jobs in the commercial fishing industry.
wow, that sure can put a hurting on an industry…just what were they thinking…still amazes me,no tackle suppliers, boat manufactures, tackle shops, motor manufacturers no one has stepped up and complained?
isn’t this exactly what we’d expect such a report to say? the commercial guys are in business to earn a living. they are trying to make money. they will necessarily do everything they can to control costs. recreational guys will often want/buy the newest gear, run faster nicer boats, etc. The commercial guys should be much more efficient at catching fish. Good for them.
I wonder how much of the fish within the 200 mile waters are caught by foreign fishermen. I would be more interested in that then what the people who bleed for this country are catching . I wonder how many jobs the foreign boats take?
are the commercial numbers only representing the financials to the fishermen or do they include the seafood buyers, wholesalers, markets, restaurants etc…
Seems a little background on these numbers might be in order. Who produced this report?
It is a shame that fishermen are still trying to pit recreational against commercial. Our government is trying to force us all off the water by dividing us up and conquering the little pieces, one at a time. When fishermen continue to target each other, we are easy prey for the eco control freaks

No foreign flagged vessels are allowed to fish inside of our 200 mile EEZ.
