I was told by a DNR officer this is a baby Cobia if so I have to think I have the record for smallest Cobia on rod and reel. It was caught on the back side of Kiawah so maybe they are breeding locally.

Southern Hake. They are everywhere this season, I haven’t heard a good explanation why. My son caught one at Shem creek a few weeks ago. ’
I’ve seen juvenile cobia about a foot long, they look just like an adult cobia, which is only somewhat superficially like the hake.

No, I showed him the picture at near dark and he just took a quick look at it on my phone (small screen) so that may of been the reason. I didn’t know what it was because many species of fish change appearances through their life cycles and Cobia isn’t a species I have a lot of knowledge about because I’ve never targeted them but would like to. I never use peoples names without permission as it may be offensive to them and I try not to be like that. I looked it up today when I had some free time after seeing responses to confirm. Which I would now agree it is a hake but still a new catch for me.

If you took the time to read the above posts, you would have seen that it is a Hake. I guess you would have no problem getting ticketed by DNR because they mis identified a fish.
