Red beads

How many of you use beads above the swivel on your down rods and free lines? I’ve heard it helps protect the knot from the egg sinker and also makes a little noise. I guess I just want to hear everyone’s opinion.
Thanks, Bob

I use beads, mainly to reflect light. They do make noise when you are working like a plastic worm when bass fishing but I mainly use them for the lit effect. I used a clear and red. Don’t waist your time with those at walmart, they are too high. You can get more much cheaper in an arts and craft store.

I use clear faceted beads because that is the way I was shown how to rig a DL. I always assumed it protected the knot from the rough surface of the egg sinker. BTW definitely check the hole of your egg sinkers- they can cut your line if they are too rough or improperly finished. A small file goes a long way in cleaning it up.

Something to remember when using beads. Make sure u are using the proper size that corresponds with your line size/knot. If the bead is sitting on top of the knot it is doing nothing and are actually better off without one. Make sure your knot is sliding up INTO the bead for protection.

Alot of times I take a small drill bit and drill out just one side of the bead running the bit about half way through it.

Also, if you really want to create noise try my trick of putting two glass beads of any color between your egg sinker and your plastic bead. This works great on a Carolina rig for bass, because the two glass beads make a lot more noise than plastic ever will. Get them at a kraft store too, such as Michaels, for a much better price. Just ignore all of the stares you will get from the women there or tell them you’re shopping for your spouse or girlfriend.

I went to Joanne’s just up the road from us and bought a bag of 500 clear beads for less than $5. I shouldn’t have to buy beads for several years:smiley:

Another thing no body said was. If your pulling boards with just a swivel an no weight it keeps the board from sliding all the way off when u reel it in!

I've been doing this for years when bass fishing at night with a standard Texas rigged worm. I'll always have my line rigged with glass or brass beads between the bullet weight and hook when night fishing for bass. I think that they make more noise than the plastic ones.

Fog where is this Joanne’s you speak of? I’m needing some beads…not but five left in my bag.

You can find them at Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, and about any arts and craft store. I bought several hundred of clear and red and they were excactly the same as walmart sells in a pack of 10 or so. I can’t find brass beads anywhere though.

I’m in Lexington when I’m at work…so I was trying to avoid having to go over to Harbison. (I avoid that over there wherever possible)

I was hoping the place Fogman mentioned was over my way.
