Red Fish Schools

Went out 3 times last week and my Log Book said the Reds should be in schools by now

Are they late this year?

Caught some nice fish for dinner but only saw 2 or three at time

dl,i don’t think they’re in their big schools yet. saw i think more than 2-3 in a group but not the big schools you see in the winter. scared a big number of reds yesterday not knowing they were there but still didn’t look to be more than 10-15 fish. even during the winter time i can pick up what appears to be “loners” at the same spots i’ll go to all year long. i usually find those loners a foot away from the shoreline and can see their backs come out of the water and nail cut mullet in only about 6 inches (or less) of water. i did see that yesterday so i’m thinking they’re just starting to get closer to schooling but not quite there yet. did see porpoises EVERYWHERE yesterday and they were on a mission. that might speed up the schooling

Saw a group of about thirty or forty on thursday, put the fly in the path twice and spooked both times. Couldn’t get one to bite, but its always fun seeing that many in fairly clear water. Last december or january I remember seeing a school several hundreds of fish strong, now that’s a sight! Can’t wait to see that again soon!

But yes, for the most part I’ve seen only a few fish together so far.

I caught 17 in 2 hours on the fly and doa grubs out of a school or 50-100 this weekend. Mostly all over slot fish. The school would occasionally spook and then settle back down a short ways away. The seagulls were working them, so the location of the school was easy to follow.

I watched dolphins destroy another school this morning.
