Red Neck Sleigh Rides May 19-20

Mornin’;
…come one come all (I think our “big trip” last year was only 8-10 yaks). As “Yak on the Fly”, has mentioned the BARF Annual Cobia Sleigh Ride is slated for May 19 & 20. Didn’t do great last year, just a few sharks. Cobia aren’t in the River yet. Here’s a Google Earth shot of the “Sleddin’ Hill”:smiley:

Not a hard paddle (quick out and in), launch is in a protected creek. Last year we had sharks, on the flats within 50 yds of the launch. Caution does need to be taken: *Shark have teeth. *Cobia when brought to a bpoat or gaffed can kick the crap out of you. *Broad River can “KickUp” fast. Adrenaline Rush, can definately be "X-treme Kayak Fishin’ ".

Where is this? I don;t know if me and my pelican can handle the sharks and cobia but it might a be a hoot to shoot this… :smiley: I have an underwater bag for my cameras and need some “sports” shots for my portfolio…

I don’t lie about the fish I catch… I just remember them bigger…

hey nik, i have a pelican as well, i think i will be down there though, mine is a tandem for rec use with the family and extra storage when im fishin,paddlin for reds, what type of equipment should i bring???

bring em in

I guess I’ll bring my rods as well as my cameras…:smiley:

…Sorry ‘bout that. I’m used to my location appearing on my posts. I am also known by "X-Fishin’ ", on the KFS site. I’m located in Beaufort along with “Yak on the Fly”. This is the Broad River. 100-200 yds or so off of MCRD Parris Island. Got a guy from MD/VA comin’ in, I haven’t heard from the GA contingent yet. But, Yep…It’s a “Hoot”. :smiley:

We also have a Kayak Fishing celebrity possibly coming to shoot video of us from his helmet cam.

I will let you all know more as I get the facts.

X-Fishn… He is from the KFS site too, but further north than VA/MD, but recently from way down south in Floriduh! Call me and I will fill you in on the story. He was who I needed the info for camping for.

:smiley: I think it’s better then an E-Ticket Ride at Disney World.

Mornin’;
…not in the river yet. Maybe they’ll start this week.

I couldn’t find your email P4R, I would like to get down there and fish with you guys. I have never done any cobia fishing, so I would need to touch base with you about tackle and such. Shoot me an email or reply back and let me know I will need.

Thanks a lot,
DD

Mornin’;
…tackle is simple. Normally just a 4-5’ Steel leader Shark Rig. Bait is Live eel, mullet, bluecrab, artifical…I had alot of success last year with a 4’ steel leader, and a large white bucktail jig with a red Jighead, trailing a live eel (might want to add a trailer hook, had a some eels “cut” in half).

What type (or size) of rod/reel are you using? Is my baitrunner 4500 enough, or do I need to bring the 15 and 20 size TLD’s???
Thanks again man,
Dave

The Redfish’s only natural predator is the DOLPHIN D

Mornin’;
…Sorry, I won’t be of much help. I go out loaded for bear (or “Big Guys” in the Gray suits). I use two Penn 340 GTi w/6’ Penn Slammers

There Here!!! Saw a small 35" one today.

Dolphin,
Bring that 4500 for a pitch bait/bucktail setup and bring the TLD’s for any deep drops you’re going to make. You will appreciate that extra cranking power if you’ve got to bring a big girl up in the current. We’re heading down to try for them today. Do you guys have a livewell setup for greenies/small blues?

Mornin’;
There’s been 7-8 (motor)boats on the “Rips” everyday this week. I have heard reports of Cobia at the “Rips”, a few have reported on the Beaufort Forum. I’m goin’ to try again this weekend (Yak & I got blown out last weekend). I’ll post my results.

Alright updates…

Seems DOT has alleviated the traffic problems quite a bit since Monday. McTeer will be open for traffic during peak traffic times, to vehicles under 3 tons, and no trailers.

That being said, Friday Night, 18 May, we will be meeting at McPhearson’s Serious BBQ for a “Captains Meeting” of sorts, at 6 P.M. Their BBQ is worth saving your hunger for, and inexpensive too.

Saturday morning, we will meet at the Lowcountry Marine Supply, to get together and escort vehicles to the launch site. (Elliots Beach) They will be open for us to get bait and tackle at 0630. We will leave for PI around 0700.

Perhaps, we should head to PI after McPhearson’s on Friday night, and get passes for the weekend, for those who do not already have access to Military bases. Bring Proof of Insurance, Registration and Drivers License, to get a pass.

We could also think about stacking yaks on those vehicles that already have access to Military facilities, and carpooling to and from the launch. We can work out details on Friday Night.

…also in lieu of stacking. I can carry a “few” kayaks on my trailer. I’m bringing 02 yaks (03 if Yak needs one for his brother), I can carry at least 07 total. Maybe more depending on which yaks come. I spoke with my “MP” buddies, even with my pull… you can’t get a Sat. day pass, on Fri. You have to get one each day. Sorry.

How far is the paddle? Is the sixteen footer a better boat for this, or would the 23.5 work out fine? Also, are you guys anchoring, drifting, using a sock??? Sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure I am prepared if I join you guys.
