I just got a gopro video camera and took it out on the flat. I just saw one fish, Monday 5/16/2011, but he liked what I was throwing. He hammered a blue crab fly I had tied, but broke me off on an oyster or something. Here is the link to the video:
It was just after 8 PM when I saw him. I cut out the redfish shuffle part of the video (me running across the flat in water over my knee trying to get close before he disappeared, that was the first 2 minutes of video).
Awesome video John!
Can’t wait to see more in the future!..with fish on!
That’s a good camera too!..I like how you can see that tail just about clear as day, even with all the chop from the wind!
Ok, here are the pictures you asked for of the blue crab pattern. I can thank my fishing buddy Haulin Bass for this one! I used blue thread, some thick wool yarn in tan and brown, some gold, blue and crystal krystal flash. The orange material is large krystal hackle. I use some puglisi fibers in tan for the tail, and barr it with a brown sharpie. I used a gamagatsu hook, black brass eyes, and a titanium weed guard. I also used a touch of lead thread tide to the bottom of the hook shank to make it run upright. I finish it with a coating of epoxy (I can sometimes overdue the epoxy, it looks great though!) and then I usually put some sally hansen on. I even run the epoxy down the hook over the thread.
Here is a bonus for you. This is the cobia fly that I tied. I have only been out once, but I got to see 3 fish and cast to two…had a follow on this fly. The fish got all the way to the boat and I just ran out of line to manipulate. If you look close you will see that I tied in a stinger trailer hook on this fly. I tied and epoxied 50lb mono on to the hook shank before tying the fly, making a loop, then put the stinger on after.
The second picture included a box of .22 shells to give a perspective on size.
