Bottom fished in 75’ and got 12 myself in a few hours. They kept eating my live baits that were intended for grouper. They are worse than sharpnoses now. I think those were threatened at one point too… I had kids who had never offshore fished fishing with chicken rigs catching them… Someone needs to give me the money these folks are spending on this research and I will use it to fix that oil spill. I understand there are some tree frogs in Northern California that are threatened… maybe all you corrupt organizations need to head out there and look into that… unreal…
EXACTLY!! I have been saying this all spring. Most of my good grouper #s in 80-105ft are infested with 3-12# red snapper. They will hit anything you send down.Almost like winter bsb. Some of the most stringent fed limits are on red snapper,AJs,and sharpnose sharks.I think it is safe to say they are no longer “endangered”.I will say that any sharpnose that comes to my boat is endangered at that point.
“Modern day Robin Hoodism-Steal from the sucessful and give to the poorly motivated.”
Did one dive with the wife on Saturday in 70’ and saw several dozen red snappers and a load of gags. She wanted to shoot one, but I had to remind her that they were “endangered”. I must be the luckiest guy on Earth. They are supposedly down to 3% of all time historic levels, yet I see them on just about EVERY SINGLE DIVE that I make no matter what the depth. Maybe I should start looking for the lochness monster next since I have such great experience with locating these rare breeds.
You are right, and you know what else is ridiculous about that? You can still keep 10 dolphin per person according to SAFMC. They have not been around the last several years like in the past. Some days dolphin are thick, but it has been spotty. You caught more RED SNAPPER on 5/31 than I caght DOLPHIN trolling EB to 600 ft of water on the same day. We kept 7, w/ 2 thowbacks. It really makes no sense.

Chas’n born, Chas’n raised!
Be careful what you wish for. The dolphin fishing this year is most likely environmental. The dolphin action was pretty hot last year and spotty this year, but you also had a cold winter that warmed up incredibly fast. Inshore water temps went from mid-sixties to mid-seventys in the course of a week. That has nothing to do with "overfishing". While I agree that 60 seems pretty high, it's not very smart to start pointing fingers at fishermen.
Dolphin are cyclical to some degree. We have been crushing them big time every year for the past ten, and we knew it would give somewhere. Also, it has been a wierd year weather wise.
Just like Phin said way back in the early stages of the ban. Another 6 months. I think the date is December 5, 2010.
I'll be surprised if we can fish then.
We've caught them in 60ft this year and were deffinately not targeting snapper.
Just found this, don’t think ANYONE could say it any better…

Thursday May 27, 2010
With little fanfare and no public comment allowed, the South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council (SAFMC) has decided to leave the red snapper season closed in it’s jurisdiction for another 180 days. That means that from North Carolina to the Florida Keys, no red snapper may be taken.
I don’t know about you, but this seems to be a pretty draconian move on their part - particularly because they apparently have no scientific evidence to tell them the extended closure is necessary.
I have seen several boats who ignored the law and took red snapper anyway. They were showing off their catch in a gas station parking lot away from the water. These are the kind of anglers we do not need. They have become as much a a part of the problem as the tree huggers.
PETA, et al., are jumping for joy right now as they see this being another step toward totally eliminating any kind of fishing.

I spoke up, but Govt people trying to justify their existance being funded by politicos being funded by multi million dollar organizations with a multi faceted agenda makes it a little frustrating. Especially when organizations that used to protect fisherman have been infiltrated by people who …well, never mind…

Today’s question:
~What do the following have in common?~
Alaskan Leader Fisheries (highly capitalized commercial fishing group that long lines and owns catch shares)
Bristol Bay Economic Development Corporation (commercial fishing group that owns salmon catch shares / quotas)
Coastal Conservation Association (originally founded by an Exxon oil guy to combat Gulf shrimpers and bycatch after the shrimpers blamed shrimp problems on oil operations)
Guardian Marine International LLC (maker of high speed marine patrol boats and other government vessels)
Oregon Iron Works (another maker of high speed marine patrol and other government boats)
Shelford Boat Ltd (another long lining and catch shares commercial operation)
Shipbuilders Council of America (google this one and look at their mission/purpose)
Todd Pacific Shipyards Corp (more of the same)
HINT: The answer can be found in the Federal lobbying database.
Reds snapper have been restricted in the gulf since around 2004. Now you can not catch a grouper with out having to catch 10 ars before you can get to the grouper. That is first hand personal knowledge…hence a fact…we will continue to see that here if we are allowed to fish.
