Red snapper ID

Can anyone tell the correct name for this snapper

how deep did you catch it?

Doing some armchair ID (i am no pro! find paul!) i vote bigeye snapper

i was thinking yelloweye… if it came from the deep??? I haven’t caught one in many years.

I caught one of those several years ago wreck fishing on a head boat out of Hatteras NC. The captain and mate referred to it as glass eyed snapper. I’m sure the name varies depending on the region. When I caught mine the captain noted that he usually only saw a few per year on his boat.

fish came from 3000 ft deep but I had one many years ago that was caught in 200’
Someone said Alphonso Snapper but I can’t find that on Google

3000ft deep? did you use an electric reel?

Looks almost like a cross between a ruby and a wenchman.

Do tell when you find out…

Well… it’s definitely a deep water snapper. If it’s a yelloweye, we caught them a lot in the bahamas… mostly 600-1200 feet of water. Great eating!

Fish was caught in 3000 feet by commercial boat. Paul you out there can you tell us what this really is? Flesh was cross between lobster and crab. Someone said that DNR calls them Alphonso snapper

Red bream - Beryx decadactylus.

An alfonsino is what it is.

We also have splendid alfonsino’s, Beryx splendens, but they are smaller in size and not as deep-bodied as decadactylus.

Sublimeone and Phin thanks so much you were right on and the flesh was magnificent

Did the LEAN MACHINE bring that alfonsino in? We use to see a few come in back when wreck fishing started. There is also a black version of them that is mistakenly called a “pomphret”. I like them and barrlefish, and sure wish they were common.

Think it came from the Growler

I saw one of these doing a deep dive on live bottom off of charleston. I knew it was a deep water fish so I did a double check on my depth gauge. We have them here and they do come in less than 200’ but they are not very common. I have seen about as many of these as I do tau tog.

1000 yards of braid will get you down there... Cranking it back up is the problem...
