Red snapper opening

I think a major problem is that Florida and South Carolina are treated as being similar and we are NOT! Trying to regulate fisheries from Fla to NC the same way is just ridiculous. In Fla you can catch red snapper in the harbor. We have to travel 25-30 miles or more. Thus we need relatively good weather to target them They can fish in almost any weather (and do). JMHO

Certainly a factor. Florida single-handedly blows out the quota (ACL) on "dead discards" alone according to SEDAR scientists calculations.

Oddly enough, SC did a tagging study on red snapper a decade or so ago. They found that something like 85% of recaptures were located within 0.25 miles of their initial release.

That being said, red snapper is a headliner species that the feds will never give up, even though the show a non-migratory pattern.
