Red Snapper Regs...

So let me be clear… this is not my opinion… I don’t consider myself versed enough, or educated in this matter enough to have an opinion… I just saw this pop up, and thought it was an interesting read, and might be even more interesting to those of you who do have opinions on the matter…

"to hell with insane… I’m OUTsane!!! "

Oh boy, you probably poked the hornet’s nest! Thanks for posting it though. I thought it was a good read.

all I got to say is its pretty hard to release a red snapper let alone any fish alive after bringin it up 170 feet and their stomach is popped out

25 seacraft

and all I got to say is that the number one authority on red napper (Bob Shipp) who knows more about the species that anyone in the world says that they are not over-fished in the GOM and that oil rigs and artificial reefs in Alabama have expanded the population to over 5 times that of virgin stocks found in the 1880’s. In the 1880’s the stock was almost completely decimated from a fleet reporting a 2 million pound catch. So within a decade boats in the 1880s wiped out the stock from western florida to the Yucatan penninsula. Today, the TAC is somewhere around 9 million pounds and there are more red snapper than every before… So, you tell me what the obvious answer is!!! Some people don’t like to look at the numbers.

The article is about the Gulf Coast red snapper situation. It would be nice to have more than a one day season here. Possibly 2 variable days of good weather. With an announcement 4 or 5 days in advance. It doesn’t work that well to have a one day season that turns out to be a 4 to 6 ft. w/20 to 25 knot winds.
Something like 2 saturdays between may 1st and august 1st to be determined by weather. Is this a viable idea?

since we cant eat them… 17"red snapper make fantastic bait for big amberjack. just look both ways before plopping them in the livewell. some law enforcement agencies frown upon this, but i am releasing the red snapper alive just as the regs require.
